Hi Everyone, I have ovarian cancer 1c, I was meant to have the normal 6 carboplatin and 6 paxitaxol. Anyway I had an allergic reaction to the paxitaxol so missed the first 2 , it was then decided to give it to me over a slow period of time and its been fine. My question now is because I missed the first 2 should I carry on and have it even though I have finished my 6 carbolpatin. My ongologist thinks thinks 4 paxitaxol and 6 carboplatin will be enough, but I am not sure as I feel I need to hit it with everything I can have to get rid of any horrible cells that could be hanging around. Anyway adice please

It very much depends on your disease. Did you have surgery, and was it successful in eradicating all visible disease? If so, that will be why your onc. is happy. I refused taxol after successful surgery for 3c grade 3 disease against my oncologist's advice, and have been clear for 5 years nearly. I could not see the point of the much more harmful drug, and wanted to get well and fit and support my immune system as early as possible, and that decision has been the right one for me. The treatment offered is often offered because it is the standard - not because it is designed for your particular situation. If carboplatin agrees with you it does 90% of the work with 10% of the damage - so don't worry!

Best wishes,

Isadora.

Hi Isadora, Yes they removed all of the tumor and it was not found in any other place including the lymph modes but it ruptured on surgery and was high grade , serous mucus with 5 per cent clear cell . Just a bit worried that I would nt have given it my all. The Ongologists says it my decision really as she doesnt want me to not have it and then worry about not doing enough, but she and one other ongologist I spoke to have said that the 4 would be fine. Where you able to relax when you refused taxol ???Thanks for your reply, best wishes to you to. Jane

I was watching another friend struggle with the after effects of taxol, and was adamant that I was not going to risk it myself. I also refused Avastin because of the potential dangers, so my oncologist was exasperated with me, but now says that I was obviously right - and admits that they are usually treating by trial and error. I was as able as any of us to relax - but I do not take the view that the medical world knows best (I have too many friends who are doctors), or that often they base their treatments on pure research, so refusing treatments seemed to me to be a responsible, considered decision. If your body rejects a treatment, you have no other option. Concentrate on supporting your immune system and being well.

Best wishes,

Isadora.

Hi, I was diagnosed 3c last Dec, four chemos before surgery and three after. On my second chemo I had an extremely bad allergic reaction to taxol and they decided I shouldn't have it again, I then had just carboplatin which worked really well, reduced the tumours enough to operate and no evidence of disease on last scan. I really wouldn't worry if I was you, I really panicked when I was told I couldn't have the taxol but it turned out well, and you had it for most of the time, try to relax and have a lovely Christmas.

Hi I think you should take the advise of your oncologists as they are after all the experts. I think chemo is tailored to every ones individual needs. Good luck for the future Love Pam x

I was diagnosed as 1c in oct 12. After radical hysterectomy I had 6 rounds of carboplatin only, my onc said this was a belts and braces treatment as the cancer was found so early, I also had a rupture during surgery. I know how very stressful a time this is for you, but try not to worry, we all know how tough chemo is so why have what you don't need. I have had 2 clear scans, have my next oncology appt on Monday and staying positive. Take care of yourself.

My OC is also stage one c with a possible rupture of the tumour and with a joint decision between my surgeon, my oncologist and myself it was felt Carboplatin alone would be the treatment of choice. I also thought if it would be more effective I would have taxol too, but the experts felt Carboplatin alone would be enough. I can only hope that this is so, but I do have great faith in them, and certainly do not want to inflict more chemotherapy on myself than necessary.

I do hope you find some peace of mind, and that you continue to heal.

With warm thoughts,

A XXX
