Hi I'm new to this site and wondering if anyone can tell me the significance of an enlarged bulky ovary.

I have been unwell for 3 months with nausea, headaches, pelvic pain, food intolerance and longer periods. I have had many ultrasounds and blood tests before being ref to gynae. US showed my right ovary was bulky and 20ml capacity and left 7ml

I think bulky ovaries can be a number of things, and you won't know for certain until you have had the relevant tests..... Cysts are common and often benign, the fact you have come on this site I think you are thinking the worse scenario.. but you won't know so try not to worry (easier said than done) sending you best wishes for a good outcome love x G x

Thank u gwyn ;) I am a little concerned as there was no evidence of cysts or masses on the ultrasound and gynaecologist wants to do a laparoscopy to go in and have a closer look however on the public system it will be about a 6 month wait before I have the operation which is a long time to still be uncertain of what is going on

I can't add anything to what Gwyn has said but am sending you my best wishes x x

Hi, this needs checking out sooner rather than later. I was led to believe the NHS should act more quickly than making you wait 6 mths. Have they done the CA125 blood test or referred for a CT scan. If not then demand one. I can only add that Sandra,s suspected groin hernia was a tumour discovered during surgery for hernia repair. That was removed and the surgeon arranged same day scan. The result showed bulky ovaries and within 2 weeks we had confirmation of OC from the biopsy result of the groin tumour. Within a week we were attending clinic to discuss a treatment plan. Get action now from your GP, it could be a benign cyst. Love Paukl xx

Hi! I know it's a worry ......... but before you start to panic, I would do a bit more research. As Gwyn says, there are some other things it may be. You will feel more reassured if you have more facts at your disposal before going back to the doctor, I should imagine. Try to have a look at the symptom tracker for ovarian cancer on the Ovacome site. It's on ovacome.org.uk and it's the BEAT ovarian cancer with Ovacome option. There's a form you can use to see if your symptoms match those in OC and you can fill in a form over the course of a week or so to print out and take to your doctor or gynaecologist. On the Ovacome site there are lots of fact sheets listed under the 'resources' option. You may find greater clarification in those. There's also a helpline listed on the site.

All the best with your research. In my experience, the more we take our symptoms into our own hands and do our own info gathering, the more we are able to discuss treatment options with our doctors. You are right to try to find out more, the key, if it does turn out to be OC, is early treatment. You will feel better when you have put your mind at rest, I am sure.

All the best in your search

Love Wendy xx

I can't thank u all enough!. The gynae did not request a CA125 but I did go to gp and request one yesterday as I rang the helpline and they suggested it could speed things up through public system. It is frustrating as I do have all the classic OC symptoms with pelvic pain, feeling full quickly, nausea, period changes spotting fatigue, bloating etc i have lost 6kg in 3 months which is because of the constant nausea and inability to consume much food. Because I am only 32 a lot of my symptoms were brushed off initially by gp, stress and changes to menstral cycle are normal. But not for me, call me crazy but I just knew it was more. After running a standard blood test which showed organs operating correctly. I persisted with go because I know my body and knew something was definitely not right. I have a follow up US on my right ovary next week - I guess it's a wait and see situation. Thank u all for ur advise, and good wishes, it has helped a great deal talking to u lovely ladies. i will check out the website wendy, tho I just realised its a uk one and I live in Australia......oops. We have a OC foundation here and after speaking with them on the phone they said that an ovary that is marginally larger than the other is considered to have oc until proven otherwise and they generally remove it to prevent risk later in life. Aparently i am supposed to be referred to a gynaecological oncologist as standard procedure but for some reason I haven't been. They had a symptom diary app which I downloaded called kiss and makeup. I kinda feel out of my league here and wish gp's would take women's concerns more seriously because we know our bodies! At least after 3 months actually almost 4, I am finally getting somewhere albeit slowly. I guess my major concern is the wait for the laparoscopy -
