Hi every one... I need some advice for what's best to treat my scars to try and reduce them.. I have a belly full of little scars from my previous op and one really large one for my latest operation?
Every said bio oil but wondering if you ladies had any other tricks?
I have to admit I've not tried anything....I figured I wasn't going to be wearing bikinis or crop tops(I'd frighten the locals) so what the heck! After 2 years its not particularly obvious anyway. Having said that, I think I heard someone say something about aloe cream, but you may want to check on that!
I might not worry about my scar, but I do use Body Shop's vitamin e cream on my face, and everyone compliments me on my skin....even a lady giving me a facial reckoned it was in better condition than her own!

Hi I had my surgery and my consultant recommended bio oil. I tried it for a while but then I just thought bugger it, this scar is part of me now so I might as well accept it. We went on holiday to Ibiza a few weeks ago and I wore my bikini with pride. Nobody asked me about if and even my teenage son (who thinks I am a constant embarrassment these days) didn't say a word. My mother in law had a hysterectomy twenty years ago and you can hardly see her scar so I know it will fade with time but to me honest I really don't care. It's my battle scar and if anyone doesn't like it then tough. Love Kerry x x
I bought some scar serum from boots and I have to say it really has made a difference. My laparoscopy scars were really really bad- to me they actually looked worse than the very neat vertical one I have from the laparotomy! It says to use it twice a day I think which I never remember to do, probably use it a few time a week but it really has made a big differnce - they have faded a lot.
I can understand with you being so young that you want to get rid of your scar, and they do say bio oil is good, they advised me to only let water trickle over it and not to use soap or shower gel for a while. I probably followed this advice for longer than I needed to though LOL you could go to the boots pharmacy and ask their advise because I think you can get something to reduce appearance of a scar a little quicker.
I am not sure though because I am older and fatter and too old for a bikini I haven't bothered I have a stick out incisional hernia as well... so there is no hope for me but to cover up with clothes.haha just one of the perks of being older ( I can't think of many ) Best wishes love x G x
Ps I mentioned this to my daughter and she said she didn't rate bio oil as it is more for dry skin ....but you might be able to get something on perscription...I do hope so xx
I didn't rate Bio Oil, I did find that the gel from an aloe Vera leaf from a plant works really well in soothing my scars, but I don't worry about them....I parade them on the beach, I am proud of them! I even considered having a zip tattooed on the big vertical one down my belly, but I am older and don't mind so much these days

and my dad mentioned having a zip tattoo it's quite quirky lol. But I'm really not a a tattoo fan lo.xx
I do find bio oil good Wendy! I am, however in agreement over the zip tattoo! Decided not to in the end as I never sunbathe! LOL!
I found that Bio oil made my skin itch, so it's probably just me.....I have to be careful what I use and try to use pure products. I find the stuff from St Kitts Herbary in Cornwall very good, generally, boot necessarily for scars though. I use pure aloe Vera gel a lot...keep a plant on my window sill and it works wonders for burns (iron or oven door variety!) it juts soothes burn mark immediately and prevents any scarring. My scar is belly button to pube level, and has a raised lumpy bit in the middle, I don't care though. It saved my life! It's probably too late to try to make it fade now......but I am well past my beach vanity phase
Funnily it is one of the few things that do not make me itch!. My scar is sternum to pubis! And wide because it was opened twice! Neater than my 1950's appendix scar though! My boob is the bigger problem at present! The stretch marks stand out like ribs, the surface looks like old orange peel and today it is red and warm. Must ring breast nurse tomorrow!

As soon as my scar was healed I moisturised with an un-perfumed moisturiser twice a day, which was I'd previously been advised to do by my breast nurse following my mastectomy. This has worked well for both scars. These days I use what ever body moisturiser I happen to have - I do tend to use ones that are paraben and sulphate free.

Hi, I think my earlier response was probably not very helpful as you are much younger than me. I thnk what Wendy said about aloe Vera is probably worth trying. I used to swear by aloe Vera when the kids were younger and always getting into scrapes so it would definitely be worth a try. Love Kerry x x

There is a product by Decleor called Prolagene gel. It's meant to be amazing for all types of scars (including acne). It comes in a tube and a little goes a long way. The only drawback is that it does take a good few months to see any improvement (about 6 months) but it is meant to be amazing.

Any kind of moisturiser will improve the skin tone and texture, but to reduce the redness of scarring and to have the best effect you should use pure oils such as Rosehip Seed oil, almond oil, shea butter infused with Essential oils. Go to a registered aromatherapist who can make you up some beautiful oils to treat your scarring and it will cost you far less in the long run than buying cheap branded moisturisers that are full of water and silicone. As a word of advice Bio Oil is a bit of a con...... read the ingredient label and compare it to much cheaper oils on the market!
When I was younger, scars worried me too. I have found the oil in pure vitamin E capsules from a health food shops, as well as the gelatinous sap from the cut leaf of an Aloe Vera plant, brilliant at healing without a scar. Aloe Vera is SO easy to grow in a pot in the kitchen and also brilliant for cuts and burns.
I am a big fan of Bio Oil! Given my age it has worked miracles! My scar (opened twice) is quite pale and it has also helped with the "old lady" crepey skin on my arms and the age spots on my hands have nearly gone! It is also helping with the thickening of my left boob due to lymphodoema following my lumpectomy earlier this year and that scar is fading too. It is not cheap but you only need a drop! Superdrug do their own version which is half the price and almost as good! I also use E45 which is prescribed for slight eczema and that helps too but I have found that bio oil is best particularly for areas of broken veins due to an old injury and those age spots!
Hi, my CNS reccomended bio oil or vitamin e cream to use once scar was healed. I preferred the texture of bio oil and have been really pleased with the results. Used it twice daily for about 6 months, and 4 years on my massive scar is now hard to distinguish, and I use bio oil for any dry skin I get.
Hi, A few have already said but bio oil is the best thing out there, it's worth every penny I've had other surgeries & it's was recommended to me several times you only need a tiny amount & it has many other uses besides, I always have a bottle in. Sue.
Hi, just read about bio oil being a con it isn't & has been sold for many years, I had an operation on my knees at 14 & the scars were awful I used bio oil & they have really faded. I also fell in garden due to knees & a twig caught in face & I had visible scar after using bio oil morning & night for 4 months it has gone & I was told by doctor I would always have a scar. I have tried the superdrug version & it is not bad but for the extra money bio oil is the best. Sue.
I'm glad that Bio oil worked for you. However I stand by what I say and it is a "bit of a con" Like all heavily branded products they are expensive because of the amount of money that goes into them to be marketed/advertised etc. Yes Bio oil contains tiny amount of essential oils, a wee bit of calendula oil in its base but this is what its base is really made up of:
Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum)
Triisononanoin
Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate
Isopropyl Myristate
Glycine Soja Oil
Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil
BHT
Bisabolol
The other thing to tell you about Bio Oil along with lots of beauty treatments it uses Benzil Salicylate is a chemical that has a dermo abrasive action on the skin, a chemical exfoliant. If you want to.
You could make your own fabulous oil that would last you ages for a fraction of the price and know that it has nothing harmful for your body or the environment.
There only one problem with this link, it is American and I have never heard of any of the products good or bad, has anyone else ?

Hi Belle, Kelo-cote scar gel was recommended to me after a total hysterectomy in Feb.. I used it daily once the wound healed & I'm really pleased with the results.. I also use Bio oil for massaging the scar. Keeping it moisturised is the main thing B-)
When my staples came out it was done by a nurse who had had a hysterectomy. She recommended I gently massage along the scar to keep it relaxed and avoid the development of keloid tissue. It really worked - gradually all the puckering went, and its all a smooth as a baby's bottom. Yes, still visible but far far less so than I expected!
