i was told 2 weeks ago a scan showed a slightly enlarged ovary with nodules. gp told me it was nothing to worry about. I have now found out I'm on the urgent list to see a gynaeacologist.. Waiting list is 6 weeks ( n Ireland).... I decided to go private and made a call today funny enough I can get an appointment on Tuesday.... It's a joke

Welcome to our group. i'm sorry you needed us. If you go onto our parent site, ovacome.org.uk you will find lots of helpful info, including fact sheets. All the best with your appointment. I hope it's not as you fear.

Thank you Wendy. I have been speaking with Ruth by email too. This site is so good to vent feelings of worry or questions. X

Hi there

Welcome and so sorry that this has happened to you. Many many people come onto this forum with similar issues who turn out not to have cancer ....I really hope that you will not.

Ruth is fantastic and sometimes for peace of mind going the fastest way is best....it is a terrible system that going private gets you up the queue , but this is how thing are done .

Take care

This early bit is so frustrating - totally understand why you felt you had to know on your schedule, not theirs. Sorry you have this, will hope its good news for you

Wise decision not to wait for six weeks. Will be thinking of you. Please let us know how you get on.

It is the waiting that gets us all. Good luck with your appointment. We are all thinking of you.

This is awful for you. I'm in NI too. Can you tell me where you have your appointment? Have you had a CA125 test. It's a good indicator but far from perfect. Raised levels could be caused by something other than cancer and levels can in some cases be normal even if cancer is present. If the medics think there is any possibility of ovarian cancer they are supposed to follow the NICE protocols which came out last year.

Here's the link:

nice.org.uk/guidance/qualit...

So you need to ask some very direct questions at your appointment. Is OC a possibility? Are the NICE guidelines going to be followed? The specialist unit for OC is in the City Hospital. My surgeon was a specialist is gynae oncology.

Here's hoping it's not OC in your case, but if it is you want to make sure you're being treated as you should be.

All the very best to you

Linda

I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. My GP found a lump and we decided I'd pay for a scan privately. It would have been an 8-week wait in Wales. Just as soon as my GP had my scan results back he organised an emergency gynae appointment which came through within 5 days - not in my local hospital but it was in reasonable travelling distance.

I agree with your course of action. If the NICE guidelines don't apply over there I would also book a private appointment. It's costly but time is of the essence if you have a problem that needs sorting out urgently.

It might be worth ringing your GP again to say you don't feel such a long waiting list is reasonable compared to other women in the UK and is there any way he/she can push for an earlier appointment/cancellation.

I wish you luck with this. Please let us know how you're getting on as we'll be worried about you.

I would echo what Annie has said- it isn't ideal but if you are able to speed things up then do. Hopefully you will be reassured. It's difficult to wait and sadly there can be implications to leaving things. I went private as initailly my situation was not considered urgent and it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. I was seamlessly referred back into the NHS and seen very quickly. Best of luck, Sarah.

Hi everyone. Yes I am going privately for the initial assessment anyway..I work as a nurse for the NHS so I know what waiting lists are like. I hopefully have nothing too much too worry about.. Here's hoping anyway x

I thought if there was a risk of cancer you had to be seen within two weeks?
