Hi all

Hope all is well

Does anyone use voltarol gel to help with aches soreness ect. Does it help??

I am on sulfasalazine and arcoxia 90mg a anti inflammatory medication. And levothyroxine.

Is the gel ok to use with the meds I am on as the gel contains diclofenac.

Your replies are always so helpful.👍🤔🥰

Yes I use it sometimes when pain is bad but I also have capsaicin cream which was recommended by my Rheumy and the GP prescribed it. I find that works even better.

But I would always prefer to ask advice from someone medically qualified or your pharmacist before I use any over-the-counter medication in addition to those prescribed by my Rheumy and I strongly recommend you do the same.

That sounds interesting. Does it make your skin hot?

No. But some people can have an allergic reaction to it.

I have certainly used it a lot in the past - mainly on my hands at work if they were bad, as it seems to kick in more quickly than tablets. That said, I was not taking NSAID tablets so like Lolabridge says, probabaly best to check. One thing to note is that I found that where the diclofenac tablets I had gave me stomach pain sometimes, the voltarol did not.

Generally it's not advised to use both an oral NSAID & a topical one. That said I think it is a general rule not one set in stone as there are always exceptions to the rule, especially in Rheumatology! My Rheumy is ok with me taking etoricoxib (Arcoxia) & applying diclofenac 2.32% as per directions since my dose was reduced from 90mg to 60mg daily in line with revised dose recommendations, particularly as my hands are painful with both RD & OA & if I can I’d prefer to remain on 60mg.

As always I'd check with your Rheumy or Nurse first. An alternative could be Pernaton, green lipped mussel gel. I've used this extensively as there are no contraindications with NSAIDs.
