I’m wondering if anyone else having had a kidney transplant is dealing with a large amount of weight gain. If so how are you dealing with it?

Weight gain after getting a transplant?

Yes, I've gained almost 20 lbs since my transplant 2 years and 3 months ago. I did stop eating baked goods, cookies, chocolate for the most part, but certain holidays I do allow myself one piece of chocolate a day. Fruit juice with sugar added is also a no no. I can keep my weight fluctuations to one to two pounds, but it's been almost impossible to really lose weight. I'm waiting for the warmer weather to start walking more outside, because that should help if I'm consistent with it. I use a Step Counter app on my android phone to keep track of steps, weight and set reminders to drink water. Another problem is I have PKD, so my native kidneys are greatly enlarged and heavy. What do you do to try to lose weight?

I’m 4 1/2 months post transplant and gave already seen weight gain that concerns me. About 2 2/2 months post transplant I suddenly found myself feeling ravenously hungry—all the time. Apparently one of the meds contributes some to this according to my transplant team plus just being able to eat more with no more potassium restrictions and so forth.

What am I doing about it? I’m putting myself through diet “boot camp” starting this Sunday. I’m also increasing my daily exercise. And, I too, have just invested in a step counter. I’ve met with the renal transplant dietician for some help with this plan. 🤞

I wanted to post about this as I have been struggling with my weight for the last two months. I was maintaining my weight watching what I ate for the most part for the last year and a half since my transplant. I did have a chocolate craving and I was snacking on that from time to time, but I wasn’t losing weight and wasn’t gaining any either. So for the new year I cut out all sugar, breads, started portion sizing and avoiding the snacking and increased my exercise. Well I don’t think my body liked that I have since gained 15lbs. My doctors all say it’s the prednisone but it is very discouraging after really putting in the extra effort to see the opposite effect happen. I have never been this heavy and I don’t know what to do other than to keep working out and working on a diet plan that works. For now I have appointments scheduled with a GI doctor and a dietitian to see if I can get back on track.
