Hello Sharleen:

Yes the Canadian Neuropathy Association was registered in Canada, thus I guess making it a Canadian site. However, we have members from around the world so I guess in reality we are an International site.

As far as the pain and numbness in your feet this is common in Neuropathic patients. We can feel things like pins and needles, stabbing, fire blazing down on your skin, like symptoms, or a feeling that your feet are in a bucket of water and ice, and believe it or not, you can have one or all of these symptoms at the same time!

There are over 150 different causes and just about the same number of Types of Neuropathies. The most common types are, peripheral neuropathy (canadianneuropathyassociati..., autonomic neuropathy (canadianneuropathyassociati..., mononeuropathy (canadianneuropathyassociati....

The symptom that you are having at a given time can dictate the best course of treatment. This is done through your GP or surgeon.

Follow the protocols that hundreds of members have tried:

1. Aquafit: Aquafit will improve cardiovascular and muscular strength; develop core conditioning, body awareness and body composition. Aquafit eliminates the impact to joints, and reduces stress on the heart.

2. Therapeutic Riding: Research shows that students who participate in therapeutic riding can experience physical, emotional and mental rewards. Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength.

3. Massage Therapy: Rubbing may interfere with pain signals' pathways to your brain, a process called the "gate control theory," according to experts. Pain impulses run toward the spinal cord and then up the cord and into the brain. It's only when they reach the brain that these impulses, are perceived as pain. When you rub, it sends other impulses along the same nerves. When all these impulses try to reach the brain through nerves, the nerves get clogged like a highway during morning rush hour. The result? Most of them won't reach the brain. And if the pain signals do not reach the brain, you won't feel pain. Thus massage works by 'closing the gate that pain impulses have to pass through. Massage Therapy also stimulates the release of endorphins, the morphine-like substances that the body manufactures, into the brain and nervous system.

4. Drug Therapy: There are some different drugs on the market that are meant to help relieve neuropathic pain. Lyrica - was designed just to treat the burning, stabbing, shooting symptoms of nerve pain caused by diabetes or shingles. When taken as directed, Lyrica can give you pain relief as soon as 1 week after you start taking it. Lyrica works by reducing the number of "extra" electrical signals that are sent out from damaged nerves in your body. Neurontin - Neurontin (gabapentin) is another drug that works in the same manor as Lyrica. Cymbalta - Cymbalta is not a narcotic. Scientifically, Cymbalta is believed to work by increasing the action of serotonin and norepinephrine, two naturally occurring chemicals in the body. These chemicals work together to turn down pain messages being sent from the damaged nerves in the feet, legs, and hands to the spinal cord. By turning down the pain messages, Cymbalta can help you feel less nerve pain.

5. Vitamin Therapy: Our data miners are constantly surfing the Internet to unearth information that would be of interest to our members. For example, most Diabetics are depleted in minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium. Many tests may show that a patient’s levels are normal, however, a Diabetic should have more than the normal recommended daily allowance of these supplements. Further research has shown us that water softeners capture these elements from the water thereby depleting the body even more. Due to the fact that our soils are so depleted these days, it is a good idea to talk to your Doctor about supplements. Our suggestion would be the B complex stress complex vitamins, potassium, magnesium, calcium, alpa-lipoec acid and Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) to reduce nerve pain might be considered as well.

The above are just a few ways to decrease your pain and with Aquafit, you can maintain your level of fitness.

This I hope will help until you seek medical intervention.

Maybe some other member might have an idea or two and they may post here as well. This is what Health Unlocked is all about.
