IHello everyone, I feel a bit down at the moment and feel as if I am in no mans land. My consultant has taken me off long term use off nebulized Colomycin (for a lung disease) as it maybe the cause of the neurological side effects of being on this drug too long. In the meantime I have to wait three months to see if the sensations disappear. My doctor prescribed Amatryptiline to help. But I realize these can make the condition of restless legs worse. I am also prediabetic and understand these awful sensations can also be a side effect of this condition. I'm hoping someone on the Forum can help and enlighten me.
Does anyone know what the difference is between the two conditions, namely, Restless Leg Syndrome and Peripheral Neuropathy? If yes, are they treated differently? Many thanks RR

In short, RLS is an very unpleasant, irresistible urge to move the legs (usually legs but can be other body parts too) only relieved by moving the body part.
It generally happens at night, but can be present during the day.
Neuropathy is more of a burning, tingling, pins and needles feeling. It does not cause an urge to move but could make RLS worse.
Both conditions have distinctly different symptoms and causes.
The amitriptyline will likely make RLS worse, if you have it.
Gabapentin or Pregabalin would be better choice and would cover both conditions.
I have both and agree with the succinct analysis that Dogdoo gave. I use a long lasting Tramadol and also Pregabelin and these are helpful for both. Pain is more apparent with peripheral neuropathy than RLS. By coincidence I am also prediabetic but not overweight. I think the tablets are to blame
