Hi everyone, I’m a chronic pain sufferer which a lot of the time feels soooo hopeless! (I’m sure the majority of you know the feeling 🙄) so I was hoping since this community has pain in common we could all add a comment with ANY tips, tricks, advice or methods of pain relief! Anything is worth listing if you can! Thank you ✨💗

some things i can improve alone, like making sure i don't overheat as i have heat intolerance. heat makes everything worse for me. also i have coeliac and avoiding gluten (and my other food allergies and intolerances) helps b/c if i eat something i shouldn't all of my symptoms worsen.

beyond that, i do not take steroids because they gave me bone pain, which is the worst pain i've ever felt. i literally lay on the floor trying to breathe, so no!

for me, the meds mostly take off the edge so i can function. i've never taken anything that completely removed the pain. sorry. though if you live in a marijuana friendly state, from what i've heard from others, it really works. if not, make sure you take your tablets and let the docs know if the pain doesn't at least let up.

stay strong.

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I’ll keep all that in mind. I have heard great things about marijuana but of course that’s controversial 🤪 Glad you’ve found ways to manage your pains!

Evidence now shows that even opiate painkillers are not effective for most types of chronic pain. I say this as someone that has run the gamut of prescribed painkillers from prescription codeine all the way to neuropathic painkillers like gabapentin, and even Botox injections. The only thing that ever takes the edge off is morphine, but it is only the edge, and that leaves me unable to drive or otherwise properly function when I’m a single dad to a child with complex needs. In addition to medication, I’ve also tried high strength cbd (emerging studies suggest that for all but some kinds of musculoskeletal pain, CBD is only helpful if it contains THC and the other, currently restricted cannabinoids), and various alternative therapies. I would try marijuana, but aside from the legality here and access issues - although there are now private clinics emerging that can legally prescribe it in the UK - I didn’t get on with it on the few occasions I tried it recreationally back as a naughty boy in the late 90s, and one of my issues with CBD other than lack of efficacy and cost was that it made me feel a similar, unpleasant way to using cannabis/marijuana.

Ultimately, after 11 years and many failed drugs, I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s nothing to get rid of my pain, or even reduce it to any meaningful, practical level, so then it becomes about learning to live with it, and the way I’ve done that is by utilising mindfulness and pacing myself. Mindfulness for pain management doesn’t alter the level of pain, or the physical severity necessarily, but it does alter your relationship with the pain over time, meaning that you accept and tolerate it differently. It also enables me to better pace myself on ‘bad’ days, and accept that I need to do so. Ultimately, it hasn’t reduced the physical sensations, but my ability to live with it and lead a full and active life in spite of constant, chronic pain has improved dramatically.

Wow amazing message! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply with so much info and advice! I’ll definitely look into some of this. Your last paragraph about learning to live with the pain is truly inspiring! I wish I could be that accepting of it. You sound like an amazing dad putting so much work into your mind to be the best version of yourself! I’ll definitely use that advice!! Take care ✨

For muscle pain, bone degeneration - my husband takes CBD oil 1200 mg (in morning and in evening). He swears by it!! One day I will try this for my arthritis.

CBD oil from headandheal.com been using for a few years now. They provide explanations on how much to take, etc.

oh, i forgot about that! i also use cbd. i wasn't sure if it worked until i ran out one time and i could definitely tell the difference. it had no thc, but it still helped me. i would try it. perhaps along with your other meds it will help. i'd recommend looking for a brand that is gmo free and third party tested; also be sure the tests show no thc so you won't get in trouble with your docs if tested.

I think everybody here can agree that no action/treatment whatever is 100% in drawing the pain down or away. Nor are they consistent.

There are days when I rely on medication to help while on other days stretching or going to the adorable chiropractor are the answer. However it can change and fluctuate so fast. I think we all have many things in our toolbox.

I don't use narcotics as I'm allergic to acetaminophen. So if I ask for a pain pill it's a big boy pain pill. I don't want that in my system.

I use muscle relaxers to dampen the edges I use ibuprofen and nerve blockers. Some days an ice compress on my head is the only way to dampen a headache while other times I'm lucky and am able to sleep for a while.

Our bodies are so complex and most of us don't respond within normal limits. So the more things that we can try to utilize, whether it's meditation or going for a walk, or sex... just keep packing your toolbox and don't be afraid to try everything.

And don't be too hard on yourself. We really have to develop and harvest self-care techniques. I wish you well. It's not a fun road.

Blessings to all

Hello, I have just came across your post, and wanted to check in and see how you are feeling now? On the point of painkillers, any of them, no matter if they are regular day to day ones or heavy hitting like morphine, they all do not give you 100% pain relief. I have had this argument with one of the GPs at my Drs surgery, that in all studies on pain management, the best most people can hope to achieve is 85 to 90% reduction in pain. This GP, keeps insisting that I’m on the highest dose, no I’m not, buy hey ho, and I should have 100% relief from my pain on the medications I take. But, according to N I C E own research, nothing is 100% effective, and as an experienced GP, she should be aware of this. As others have stated, sadly all you can do for to help the “missing” part of relief is pace yourself, yes, I know it’s easier said than done, my own worst enemy, but it does work if you try to stick to doing that. Also, heat, if you can tolerate heat, and as someone else has said, in a way mindfulness. I can’t do it completely, don’t have the concentration for it, but just to start working your way down your body from top to toe, trying to relax every part of your body. Again, it takes practice, but it can help, to which degree, I’m sorry I can’t say what it would do for you, but it’s worth a try. Sorry for the long reply. Hope you are now feeling/doing a bit better. Take care.
