Who has experience with actikerall therapy?
My dermatologist suggested that I use actikerall every night on several lesions (actinic keratosis) on the back of my right hand. December 2011, I had a lesion (diagnosed as Bowen disease) removed from my right ear.
I find it hardly possible to remove the actikerall film from my lesions every morning as suggested by the physician. However, the therapy has been successful on 3-4 lesions. One lesion, unfortunately, has not responded to the actikerall therapy and may be turning into another lesion of the Bowen disease type. My dermatologist was very optimistic about the effectiveness of this therapy based on the reports in the medical literature. She is keeping a close watch on any changes in my skin and would send me to a surgeon if there were the least suspicion of a squamous cell carcinome in situ again this year.
My actikerall therapy appears to be effective over time, but it is extremely difficult to remove the film layer each day. The physician suggested using warm water, but I haven't found this helpful at all.
I was given it for an AK on my eyebrow as efudix wouldn't reach it. Dr said to use it once a day for 6 weeks. The day after the entire AK peeled off and has never returned.
I have carried on using it for other dry spots on my forehead that I know would turn into AKs. Never more than three days in a row, and each time the sore has gone painful red and swollen but once the treatment stops, it peels off, goes scratchy and red, but heals within a week. I also use Atoderm intensive baume cream after stopping the Actikerall to aid the healing process and soothe the skin.
Amazing stuff but painful and hard to peel the protective layer off. Much better than the first time I had an AK on my forehead about 8 years ago when I saw an old fashioned consultant who surgically removed it.
But I could not possibly use it once a day for six weeks
