»NEW ORLEANS — Investigators confessed to being "astonished" by results of a randomized trial showing that patients with acute myeloid leukemia who have a poor response following induction therapy do just as well going on to immediate allogeneic transplant as they would if they had received an intensive salvage induction regimen to get them into remission before transplant. The results come from the phase 3 ASAP Trialand were presented here at the American Society of Hematology annual meeting »

This addresses the part of SCT that my Dr said is the most difficult on the patient. He does SCT so he knows. I think induction is where they get rid of the existing stem cells to start fresh. They are skipping this step. They used high risk pts so the result is even more significant.

"Remission induction chemotherapy is administered to produce a complete remission (complete disappearance of detectable leukemia by microscopic examination) in the bone marrow, peripheral blood and central nervous system"

Others who have really done it can add better details.

Severe events were 23% vs 64%, and 19 vs. 42 days in hospital. Both way better and showing my Dr is right about the hard part.

This did not address MF but likely they will be looking onto it. It should open the door to SCT for many more.
