General Anesthesia For Adult Male Circumcision

I am going to be circumcised at 41 due to erosive balanitis and some minor phimosis. My doctor says he does these procedures under general anesthesia. I have an arrhythmia and I’m kind of nervous about being sedated for this.

Are circumcisions in men usually performed under general anesthesia? I thought it could also be local. Why do you have to be completely asleep?

Can someone share their experience please? Thank you.

I got circumcised a few months ago and it was done under general anesthesia. Had no issues of any sort with the anesthesia.

Thanks, Carl. What is the prep like? Do you have to shave or cut your pubic hair? Did they do that for you?

Do they put you to sleep before they start washing your penis and injecting you with numbing shots? Just curious what to expect.

Thanks. How long did the procedure take? How long did you have to wait before you went home?

My insurance was billed something like 16k though and I paid 1200. No pain or memory of it though

16k 😳

in reply to Mickey2323

Wow. That’s a lot of money. My insurance is converting it because of a medical issue.

That was with my insurance covering it hahah

It should not be that much. Here in California it’s 1600k with local anesthesia and 3200 with general.

I had a general as that’s what they tend to do in UK, it was great. Depending on what arrhythmia you have will determine your risk. If you have any medical conditions these will be picked up and the anaesthetist may see you before hand to discuss general anaesthesia. I’m an anaesthetist and an arrhythmia wouldn’t stop me putting someone to sleep, just may alter the way I do it! Any issues - just mention it in your pre-op and I’m sure they will advise you and reassure you!

Thank you. I actually have a very strange symptom that hasn’t really been diagnosed. Earlier this year, I did a treadmill test and collapsed when I went over a certain intensity. I have no plaque build up and my heart is fine. My cardiologist said though that when i exercise to a certain intensity my heart goes into a tachycardia and a arrhythmia. it shot up to 165 beats and quickly went down to 30. It went back to normal quickly.

How do they resolve that ? Does it affect downstairs

in reply to Mickey2323

I dunno. Still trying to figure out what it is. Kind of scary. Hasn’t happened anymore because they are giving me beta blockers and i don’t push myself. It did affect sex because my head hurts with too much strain. I end up having a headache for like 3 days. It’s awful. Hopefully they find out soon.

I’m getting circumcised for balanitis. But i also had yeast infections on my foreskin so i’ll be happy to get rid of this.

I’m 38 and I had it done I’m two weeks in. No pain at all, mild discomfort from the stitches . I had mild phimosis and balanitus. In my opinion he left too much skin but I guess we’ll once fully healed. No open sores nothing very simple process.

If you are being circumcised in a hospital there is about an 80% chance that it will be done under a general anaesthetic as that’s just the way they do things! In a specialist circumcision clinic you will only be given a local anaesthetic.

Before any general anaesthetic you will have some tests done and a consultation with the anaesthetist at which you should mention any oddities with your heart or lungs.

I had the same problem and had a general anaesthetic for mine, it was a breeze and completely pain-free. Be lucky

I had mine done under a local anaesthetic. Didn't feel a thing and chatted away to the surgeon and medical staff during the procedure.

You should thoroughly discuss your concerns with your cardiologist who knows best about the strength of your heart and it’s ability to handle the anesthesia. Your surgeon will handle the circumcision but you should have your cardiologist determine the risks.

I think local anaesthesia is acceptable if you haven't any major health problem.
