How common is it?

My Mom went into menopause at around 51. My sister still has her period at 54. I am 56 and I still have mine. Who knew?

I hit menopause at 56. I had no idea that was considered late! Not sure of the relevance, if any, but my periods started later than many - I think I was 15, though might possibly have been 16.

Some medical research suggests late start as one of many possible causes..

I was 13 yrs and 3 months. Thanks for your response.

Hi Curious1411I was 57 when l started my peri menopause. I was regular until then. Then had 2 periods 6 months apart at 58. The following year had one period. Then a small spotting thing once and that was it.

I think your body hunts around for eggs before they run out.

People ask did you start your periods late? No l started at 13 years old.

Dont worry the benefit is you probably look young for your age. Menopause is no fun I'm 60 now. Make the most of life before it gets you. All the best

Thanks for your reply. To some people I look younger than my age. Interesting thought!

I had skipped one period here and there beginning last year. I thought it was due to stress.

My sister, who just turned 54, has normal periods but has gone 4 months in a row with no periods.

It’s possible maybe our maternal grandmother stopped her periods late. 🤔

I am also a non smoker. I was also on the pill for 13 years. Maybe also my diet plays a role.

There’s hardly any information on late menopause through Google. It must not be all that common.

I have PMR, an auto-immune condition, and diagnosed at 51. I take prednisone for pain (still). Prednisone and another drug called methotrexate are supposed to increase your chances of going into menopause earlier. I take both.

When I go for bone density tests or when I see my rheumatologist and family doctor, they have assumed I have reached menopause. My family doctor even asked directly “When did you reach menopause?”

My periods have been only 3-4 days since about 44 yrs. with 1-2 days being moderate flow. I have lately also been getting burning sensations in my breasts just before my periods, but not this one. No warning signs, but cramps on the first day.

Even though I am still in peri-menopause, I still experience full-on symptoms as if I really was in menopause. The biggest two are increased daytime sleepiness and lack of concentration on mental tasks. I find them completely overwhelming. Some of it could also be attributed to my PMR.

I started menopause at 47 but I have a friend who didn't start until 58. Congratulate yourself, late menopause is an advantage for your body, bones, brain, heart. Lot of things deteriorate without oestrogen, unless you start HRT of course.
