Advice please

Hello everyone my dad is one of the blessed people who survived bacterial meningitis. He had it from 19th December 18 and after doctors ignored me yelling that my dad needs help they let his deteriorate in a and e. His so lucky to be alive as when they started to help him his oxygen was on 11. His lost his hearing to this horrible illness.

I would like advice on things we can do to help him. His so motivated to walk again. His wheelchairs bound at the moment and we are paying for a private physio. Is acupuncture good things to try? Has anyone had the meningitis vaccine to prevent it happening again? My had gets a lot of dizziness and headaches etc x

I’m pleased that you’d dad made it,, it’s an awful illness which I was unfortunate to catch February 2018.

I was 42 years old, when I contracted bacterial meningitis, and luckily my own GP recognized I was seriously ill and contacted the hospital, to say I was coming down so I didn’t have to wait in A & E, how old is your dad?

I would say it very early days In your dad’s recovery, it took me 6 months to return to work fully. I suffered headaches constantly for 5 months, gradually with them getting less servere, I had no energy and struggled with my fitness.

Lucky I haven’t had any long lasting problems, had my eyes/ears tested and my neurologist was convinced I’d make a full recovery. We spoke about meningitis vaccines and she decided that I wouldn’t need them ,as the risk of catching it again was low, but I have had the flu vaccine as I’ve had more than usual colds and coughs. So just thought I prevent getting the flu.

I’ve also had a few all over body massages from a sport physio which helped me.

I have heard that acupuncture can help, but anything is worth a try. I started swimming and steady walks out to start with, just getting outside seemed to help.

I wish your dad a good recovery, but tell him not to rush it though. I found it very frustrating , but glad I took it steady.

Thanks so much for your reply. I’ve just showed my dad and it’s a bit of reassurance for him to see others have same symptoms.

My dad turned 60 in August last year. My dad was working with contaminated water the weekend before he contacted the meningitis.

I want to try and find other people who have had meningitis as I think it’s nice to talk to others who have been through it.

HiKamik84, I to am lucky to be here,after bacterial meningitis in may2018, it was a long time before I could walk, I can now get around the house, and a little way outside with a stick, but to go further I have to use a walker as my balance is not good due to loss of vision and hearing, I think I will always need my walker for distances. I just keep doing the exercises they gave me to hopefully improve my balance. Yes I have occasional dizzy spells but I have learnt to take it slowly and stay motivated, I wish your dad all the best for the future, and it sounds like he has a caring family to help him along x

Thanks so much. So glad my dads made it was horrible when he was so ill in critical care we didn’t know whether he would make it.

Glad to hear that your Dad made it. I also lost hearing & that is very difficult. Along with that goes difficulty with balance & walking. A good physical therapist & otologist should help your Dad get up & about. It’s tough to go through the after effects but sounds like your Dad is up to the challenge! Prayers to him & the family.

I recommend scanning past posts on this site for more advice. There's a lot more out there. Many are not helped by doctors, but some were helped by chiropractors, acupuncturists and osteopaths. I would find the best ones you can. Best of luck!
