Ideas to help autistic child's social skills, boost confidence?

I live in a rural location in South Devon with a 15yr old autistic child.

When their central nervous system takes over they're not in control. This has resulted in criminal damage and common assault, making us nervous and anxious in public spaces for them. They do not meet the criteria for an enabler, may re-refer post diagnosis. They present as neuro typical but have significant disabilities with expressive language. We are trying to find opportunities to help develop their social skills and avoid isolation.

Has anyone got any ideas or experience of this? We don't have much practical support having exhausted/alienated friends, family and the community as they don't understand. They attend a specialist educational setting term time only no clubs etc due to taxi run. They rely on mum and dad for calm activities, walks out etc but would like to try and get them to engage independently beyond us. I have put a referral in to Action for Children today. Just wondered if anyone out there had any suggestions we haven't considered? They love animals but exhausted local opportunities also. Thanks.

There is a Facebook page called Tissues and Issues. They give good advice and are South Devon based. They also run social activities etc if you can get to Torquay. 🙂
