I fear there's something missing

Sept 14th, total for month so far, 65km. Long run planned for sun 15th, local 10k on 22nd, one more long run the following weekend & then slow down to the be fully ready for the hallowed HM 2 weeks later....

Only Sundays long run never happened! ๐Ÿ˜ข Another hamstring injury by over exertion? No! Pulled muscle caused by insufficient stretching? Def no! A fall? Nope!

No, this runner went to PR, had a fab run (new PB for Mrs Wiggy!) came home cut the lawn & cut some wood for kindling (love a cosy log fire after a winter run ๐Ÿ”ฅ) Not going to go into details but there was an accident with the chopsaw where I reduced my left thumb length by approximately half!

I really cannot believe that I could have been so clumsy (I have used this machine 100's of times, always extremely cautious re safety) I feel so ridiculously daft and so guilty that my teenage kids were around. One dealing with the emergency call, the other searching for the lost end of my digit! They were & continue to be amazingly brilliant and Mrs Wiggy is off the scale (she's not even told me off yet!)

After being transferred to Derby Royal & meeting some great NHS & emas folk (with cruel but great senses of humour) my ridiculously young & equally talented surgeon offered me reinstallation, a fixed joint, no nerve sensitivity (I'd shredded those) and possible pain eternal, or a decent usable stump & a conversation opener. After the hour long op under really clever local anesthetic I was allowed home. Adrenaline was a far better painkiller than the ones I am currently on!

2nd point of discussion with surgeon, how peeved I was bcos I have a 10k race next weekend & HM soon. He was adamant it was a no to the 10k, but seemed to be OK with the HM, depending on check ups! My prep will be set back but my desire must be there bcos I was soo gutted that I may have to pull out!!

Sorry for the long ramble, bit bored sat at home looking at running shoes which are feeling sad at not fulfilling their destiny this week!

Stay safe folks! ๐Ÿ‘

Oh. My. Gods!!! Words fail me. And youโ€™re so brave! I would have been saying kill me now, while you were worrying about your HM. I hope you heal fast x

Thanks Flick, l think the braveface was purely adrenaline fuelled though. Fingers crossed for healing fast (bcos I can still do that ๐Ÿคž!)

oh my goodness - that must have been awful and scary.

I am impressed that you even asked about the running - and your family sound amazing!

I have my fingers crossed for you

Thanks BIT, sure everything will be OK, couple of days it'll just look a lot less scary!

Oh wow! Not what I expected. The good news, it is quite a conversation starter and eventually you will be able to joke and have fun with it. My husband got his middle finger tip cut off in high school thanks to a gym door and a girlfriend trying to keep him out of the gym. He teaches middle school and once the kids notice it, he keeps it light hearted and has a few jokes he consistently does with it.

Heal well, listen to your doc, and hopefully that HM will still be a go ๐Ÿคž

Thanks sask, partial missing digits do appear to be more common than I previously thought.

I'll probably be just that little bit lighter & more aerodynamic! ๐Ÿ˜

ooohhh nooooo. I don't know what to say!

take it easy and hopefully you will be up and running soon (apologies for the pun!)

Defo deals, I've taken the docs (& wife's) advise about the 10k this Sunday (reluctantly! ๐Ÿ˜ก) but I'm more determined than ever about the HM!

What a day! These things can happen so easily!

Just as well it was just half a thumb, my great uncle was missing most of one hand, can't remember the story now but he had part of his thumb and part of one opposing digit only but you'd never know it. He was a skilled yachtsman and hunter.

Look after what's left and look forward to the HM ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜

It did kinda change the weekend somewhat Jojo! Compared with some people, this is minor injury & I'm well aware I got lucky!

Ouch. That doesnโ€™t sound like a good way to finish a Saturday after a great parkrun. Well done to your family for getting into action at your time of need.

Hope you are healed up soon and will be able to run again before long.

Mrs Wiggy just thought that I wasn't enjoying her getting all the attention for her new PB! Def wasn't the case, promise!

Wow! I hope your recovery isnโ€™t too painful, and you can go ahead with your HM.

Thanks C3PO, I have a check up today, so hoping he'll clear me to restart gently after a few more days... I may be being a tad optimistic but that's my thought process! ๐Ÿคž

OMG! That sounds awful! But darkly amusing too just imagining your son looking for your bit of thumb ๐Ÿ˜ฎ (sorry, my Irish sense of humour)

The good news is it wasnโ€™t your toe. Now that would have bu**ered up your HM ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

uncle_wiggy profile image
uncle_wiggyHalf Marathon10 Miles in reply to Irishprincess

Good point IP, it could always have been worse! ๐Ÿ‘

No worries about jokes, I've heard & made ones from shades light to dark! Son can laugh about it now but he wasn't really enjoying routing through the sawdust at the time! Yesterday I took a bunch of ๐Ÿ’ to the neighbour who won the treasure hunt, it had pinged quite a way into a plant pot!

Iโ€™m sorry but that mental image made me lol! Sounds as though half a digit is definitely a better outcome than the alternative. Hope you recover quickly and can get back out In time to be ready for your HM ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It's totally OK to laugh about it Sandie, a sense of humour has been good medicine so far, just hoping that the surgeon is happy later today ๐Ÿ‘

Hey Katnap, surgeon & team were happy at the check up yesterday. I had a bit of a reality check as it was the first time I'd seen it when I hadn't been completely off my face with morphine etc.! So that was fun! ๐Ÿ‘ Otherwise, I'm doing kind of OK thanks KN

Howwwww did I miss this post Uncle? Oh my word, Iโ€™m so sorry (probably too caught up in my own selfish world of HMs and new babies). I feel awful for not paying more attention. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

What a hideous thing to happen. I really hope youโ€™re ok?

uncle_wiggy profile image
uncle_wiggyHalf Marathon10 Miles

You my dear cheeky have had far far better things to be concerned with this week! Congratulations to you for both a grandson & a grand run!

I was just cutting some kindling from scrap wood with a chopsaw, I've used this thing for years, build sheds from scratch & all sorts, always very safely, but think I was just moving too quickly and before I knew it I'd removed the upper half of my left thumb and trapped my index finger between the side of the blade and the cover ๐Ÿ™„ fortunately I had plenty of helpers & have been well looked after by a great surgeon. He was adamant I shouldn't run tomorrows 10k but seemed confident I can still HM on the 13th, I'll just be a bit behind in my preparation. He had to reduce it further as reattachment wasn't a good option but I should be left with a usable half of a thumb & no pain ๐Ÿ‘

All could have been so much worse & I'm just glad to be here tbh!

Have yourself a great weekend full of baby cuddles ๐Ÿค—

I went looking for this post after a comment from misswobble in her lost key post.I hope things heal fast and well. Sounds as if there was a lot of quick thinking on the part of family and neighbours. The image of your thumb pinging into a plant pot is brilliant. And I can just see your neighbor turning pots upside down in a frantic hunt.

Your sense of humor will stand you in good stead. And doctors/surgeons have a very dark sense of humour, so theyโ€™ll love you!

Keeping my fingers crossed that you can do your HM.
