I was told I couldn't breast feed with my last child 4years ago because of the medication more than anything. Check with your gp or antenatal consultant. I thought I would kiss it as I breast fed my other two before having lupus bit I didn't x

I breast fed. It was encouraged even though I was on warfarin for sticky blood. Ask at the clinic.

This is taken from our guide to pregnancy written by Prof Caroline Gordon;

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has multiple benefits to both mother and baby. It is safe to breastfeed whilst taking prednisolone, hydroxychloroquine and heparin or warfarin. Most centres will advise that it is safe to breastfeed whilst taking azathioprine as there are only low levels of the active metabolite in breast milk.

That's interesting Paul cos I was told I couldn't because of the azathioprine !! Bottle feeding is good cos others can do it relieving you of some of the feeding !

By the sounds of it, it varies between consultants.

Best to ask,but I was diaognosed with lupus at 6 months pregnant, on medication and breast fed my baby and the next one after that, and now I have two strapping lads of 25 and 22!

I didn't breast feed my little one, I only exclusively expressed my milk for 7months and it was great. Couldn't breast feed due to pain on my spine and lower back so I had to give it up when little one was 4 weeks old and I also gave him formula milk as well during the night

Hi, I'm a breastfeeding peer supporter & I have lupus. I fed my son for 6 months then had a bad flare. My consultant at the time told me I couldn't feed whilst taking hydroxychloroquine. I have since discovered the breastfeeding and medication helpline. It's run by a pharmacist and she's brilliant at offering advice & going through all your medication & whether or not you can feed on it. I recommend giving them a call before making your mind up either way.
