Is the butterfly rash , always a rash or can it also be a bright red face ????????

I am just wondering because nearly every time before i start being really fatigued etc my face burns up and usually lasts for a few hours .

Why is this ? Its happening every day at the moment as i think i've been flaring !

Larissa - maybe if you look closely you will be able to see the contours of a butterfly rash. I had a rash this summer, after 4 cyclophosphamide infusions, that even my rheumatologist couldn't identify (and she is good). She sent me to the dermatologist - whose response, after about half an hour and calling in a colleague to look - was that it had a 'classic' appearance of lupus. But he wasn't sure (or else why did he call in a colleague?) and ended up doing a biopsy ... which bizarrely showed that it was raging lupus (in my skin), but this in a situation where the dsDNA and other antibodies in my bloods had subsided to within the normal range because of the Cyclophos ....

So it might be a lupus rash but without clearly defined boundaries: I suggest you look again, next time very closely!

And sadly - once you get the rash - I wonder how high are the chances of warding off the flare. Maybe if you rested straight away?

:)

PS: My rash was bright red, slightly raised, hideously itchy and 100% ugly! (I laugh now, but it wasn't funny at the time) How is yours?

My skin isnt raised at all , it just goes really red ! I can feel ok ,then i feel my cheeks burn up and before i know it i have no energy , foggy headed and feel really ill ( i have fibro too ) but am being treated for Lupus too because of repeated positive ANA .

I havent really took a close look at the reddness ( probably because it isnt an actual rash so i dismissed it and now am starting too cool down )

I will look more closely next time , thankyou x

Once the skin on my face was quite pale, now it is permanently red and hot I wonder why lupus causes this?

Hi larissa,

my red cheeks are my warning sign too. My partner can take one look at me and say that I am getting ill. My cheeks are bright red, burning and itchy and the skin surface feels different to the rest of my face.

My hubby says the only time I look healthy is when I am ill, as I get a fine red flush all over my cheeks (butterfly) and it does look as though I have a healthy 'glow'.

No one believes you when you are like this it is so frustrating..xx

My mother used to look at my "rosy" cheeks and think I was the picture of health...I've not seen a rash either, just a burning hot face, and generally feeling unwell, its embarrassing and uncomfortable. I did get a rash on my ankles and legs a few years ago, before SLE was diagnosed, my gp said it was down to small veins bleeding. It didnt itch or feel bad and it cleared up without any treatment, still dont know what caused it
