Yes I've taken it, but not regularly enough to know if it's helped in any way. It's water with silver held in suspension, an old fashioned cure, nothing that can hurt. I think anything is worth a try!

MAYO CLINIC : Brent A. Bauer, M.D.

Colloidal silver isn't considered safe or effective for any of the health claims manufacturers make. Silver has no known purpose in the body. Nor is it an essential mineral, as some sellers of silver products claim.

Colloidal silver products are made of tiny silver particles suspended in a liquid — the same type of precious metal used in jewelry, dental fillings, silverware and other consumer goods. Colloidal silver products are usually marketed as dietary supplements that are taken by mouth. Colloidal silver products also come in forms to be injected or applied to the skin.

Manufacturers of colloidal silver products often claim that they are cure-alls, boosting your immune system, fighting bacteria and viruses, and treating cancer, HIV/AIDS, shingles, herpes, eye ailments and prostatitis. However, no sound scientific studies to evaluate these health claims have been published in reputable medical journals. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration has taken action against some manufacturers of colloidal silver products for making unproven health claims.

It's not clear how much colloidal silver may be harmful, but it can build up in your body's tissues over months or years. Most commonly, this results in argyria (ahr-JIR-e-uh), a blue-gray discoloration of your skin, eyes, internal organs, nails and gums. While argyria doesn't pose a serious health problem, it can be a cosmetic concern because it doesn't go away when you stop taking silver products.

Rarely, excessive doses of colloidal silver can cause possibly irreversible serious health problems, including kidney damage and neurological problems such as seizures. Colloidal silver products may also interact with medications, including penicillamine, quinolone, tetracycline and thyroxine medications.

The interaction with medication claim originated with a FDA consumer bulletin on colloidal silver sourced from a US National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) (now called National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health). The article by Dr. Brent Bauer, MD of the Mayo Clinic cited either the NCCAM webpage on colloidal or the FDA Consumer Bulletin (which in its current form no longer contains the source material for the citation) which quoted said NCCAM. (I have also read Doctor Bauer wrote the article for the NCCAM.)

A freedom of information act request for the source of the claim of potential drug interaction (keyword "may") to the US FDA returned a reply from the US Health and Human Services, (parent of both the FDA and the NCCIH) stated no supporting information in their possession.

I finally tracked down the claim through the Internet Archive website to the authors of the Physicians and Pharmacists Newsletters (who are PhD Pharmacists), an opinion, not based on any scientific study or clinical trial on their for pay website of Supplement Adverse Reactions. The same organization wrote polemics on supplements for the Consumers Reports Magazine, without stating their biases or conflicts of interest.

Prior to my final discovery of the source, as a medical researcher I went through the entire NIH database to find any interaction drug interaction with silver, colloidal silver or silver nanoparticles. I found zero information for thyroid, and the antibiotics and silver abstracts and articles unanimously wrote of silver which increased effectiveness of antibiotics, including the restoration of efficacy of antibiotics which drug resistance had developed. This might be construed as an interaction, a positive one, however the Mayo Clinic website article infers only negative connotations.

The possibility of argyria is a fact, however, the most famous recent case of argyria, the late Paul Karason, ingested between 8 to 16 fl oz of colloid silver with undetermined concentration (the liquid was black) over 12-1/2 years before he acquired his technicolor hue. Unless one ingests heroic quantities, high concentration (450 ppm for mild silver protein), or both, argyria is rare among silver users, the majority of the reported cases developed from medical use of silver.

The claims of kidney damage was taken out of context from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry toxicological profile on silver, from a study in which silver miners who had inhaled silver dust which also contained cadmium (a known kidney toxin), had suffered injury. The study stated their test methods could not determine if silver had caused the injury, nor could it disprove that silver was a causative factor in combination with cadmium, and the report was 'discounted,' and not included as proof of injury. The medical journal Scandia Arcta published a 20 year study of silver reclamation workers (some who had worked over 25 years in the industry) and found no such injury or abnormal levels of silver in the body.

The claim of seizures is stretching the truth a bit. One case was a previously diagnosed epileptic who chewed silver acetate gum, a former Over the Counter smoking deterrent, who had a seizure, but silver acetate gum was removed from the market when the nicotine patches became available by prescription decades ago. The other case, a 71 year old man, under treatment for prostate cancer who had previously discontinued all supplements, including colloidal silver, 11 weeks previously and received 11 weeks of a cancer drug and 36 radiation treatments spontaneously convulsed in recurrent seizures (status epilepticus) which if not stopped in 30 minutes ends in death. To stop the seizures, the patient was given Propofol (same drug as killed Michael Jackson) and typical of SE, went into a Coma and died 6 months later, one week short of 9 months after discontinuance of his supplements. (Although the 4 neurologists attributed the SE was caused by collloidal silver, no animal toxicity studies, LD50 studies or organ injury studies, ever produced seizures or neurological disorders.) Between that time (2004) and 2012 only 18 adverse reaction were reported, three for drowning, one case of Pollakiuria (extraordinary daytime urinary frequency, a benign condition defined as frequent small voids in a previously toilet trained child with no polyuria or evidence of infection. The condition is self-limited with an average duration of 7-12 months) economic distress, family stress, and a number of single adverse reaction which are statistically insignificant or coincidental such as hair color change (also listed as an adverse reaction for Vitamin C, Co-enzyme Q-10, and Cod Liver Oil).

As to colloidal silver not considered to be safe and effective by the FDA, the US FDA only considers FDA approved drugs as safe and effective, water isn't considered safe and effective for dehydration, bran cereal is safe and effective for irregularity, cherries (arthritis pain), cranberry juice (urinary tract infection) aren't safe and effective (the FDA sent enforcement letters on the above to Post Cereal, Cherry farmers in Michigan, and Ocean Spray, respectively) but FDA drugs are safe and effective and with their proper use kill 110,000 Americans annually.

For Colloidal Silver, Cherries, Water, or any mineral, vitamin, or herb to be considered safe and effective $535 million dollars must be paid to the FDA under PDUFA (prescription drug user fee act, 1992), which includes money for travel expenses and lodgings, and up to $250 million dollars for three phases of Clinical Trials and final approval (which the FDA bureaucrats can over rule the findings of their reviewers), of a New Drug Application for a single claim.

FDA approved safe and effective drugs such as Vioxx (increased risk of heart attack and stroke; linked to about 27,785 heart attacks or sudden cardiac deaths between May 20, 1999 and 2003, US 60,000 deaths world wide, the same as US losses during the Vietnam War, the VP of Merck hid for 10 years the increased Heart attack risk for those over 55, death rates in the US increased from heart attacks jumped upwards 100,000 per year after the introduction, and after the FDA pulled Vioxx from the market the heart attack death rates returned to the previous levels pre-introduction levels, the Merck VP was allowed to resign, and received a 25 million performance bonus for the Vioxx sales and no criminal charges filed, the FDA released a statement, in essence, the FDA would try and do better next time), Bextra, Darvon/Darvocent (2,110 deaths from serious toxicity to the heart), Palladone (pulled within 6 months); these drugs are a sampling of the properly used as directed pain-killers. Safe, Effective, FDA approved drugs.

Although in US States and (some insurance companies) insist on silver dragee being inedible (the silver coated sugar decorations), the FDA maintains that Silver are generally regarded as safe for human consumption in the US, but not as a confection, but as a food additive The EU Safety committee has a safety number for the silver dragees, too. One silver dragree contains as much silver as 60 ml of 10 ppm colloidal silver. (300 micrograms)

Materials Research Innovations, Vol. 11, No. 1, (2007) pages 3-18: A recent paper by Das et al. provides the remarkable datum that some 275,000 kg of edible metallic silver foil are consumed every year (in food) in India. No known adverse health effects have ever been recorded. This epidemiological evidence that silver as a metal is not toxic in any way needs no further comment. Further support for the obvious safety of consuming metallic silver (Ag0) is in the worldwide consumption of (so called) silver colloids, often made at home in primitive electrochemical cells by probably some millions of citizens, again with no ill effects.” Das, M. Dixit, S. Khanna, S. K., Food Additives and Contaminants

“Justifying the Need to Prescribe Limits for Toxic Metal Contaminants in Food-Grade Silver Foils, journal of Food Additives and Contaminants, 2005 Dec;22(12):1219-23.)

Should colloidal silver be used with Lupus Patients? Colloidal silver and silver nanoparticles have a history of boosting immune function which is generally not thought as advisable in Lupus:

In 1909, the Journal of the American Medical Association was the first medical journal to point out that colloidal silver could actually increase immune cell phagocytic index.

1919 Dr. H. Bechold, writing in his groundbreaking book of the era, Colloids in Biology and Medicine (original in German), cited evidence that silver ions increased both red and white blood cell counts.

According to clinical researcher V. Edwards-Jones, writing in Letters in Applied Microbiology, in an article titled, The benefits of silver in hygiene, personal care and healthcare:"Silver has been used for centuries as an antimicrobial agent to reduce bioburden and prevent infection…Increasing evidence of improved antimicrobial activity of nanoparticles of silver and possible dual immunomodulatory effects are exciting."

Hill and Pillsbury discovered, an increase in white blood cells after silver usage see: Hill, WR, D Pillsbury, Argyria: The Pharmacology of Silver, The Williams & Wilkins Company, Baltimore, 1939; p. 48."

Remes and Williams discovered silver ions (a common component in colloidal silver preparations) appear to 'prime' white blood cells to go on the offense against a variety of biological insults [see Remes, A, Williams, DF, Neutrophil Polarization and Immunoelectrophoresis Assays in the Study of Complement Activation by Biomaterials, Biomaterials, Aug 1991; 12(6):607-13.

Dr. Kent Holtorf, of the Holtorf Medical Group and silver may be a natural component of the human immune system: “There is evidence that silver is a natural critical component of our immune system and that low tissue levels associated with a dietary deficiency may result in a relatively weakened immune system, making one more prone to infection. "

A 2007 study published in the journal International Immunopharmacology 2007 Dec 15;7(13):1813-8. clearly mentioned silver in relation to “cytokines.”Kenneth Wong et al at the University of Hong Kong investigated the wound-healing properties of silver nanoparticles:

"Wounds heal following a complex combination of blood coagulation, tissue inflammation and remodeling, and the best medical interventions are those that prevent or at least minimize scarring.

The research indicates that silver goes further than this and modifies cytokines – the enzymes involved in cell growth and movement – leading to reduced inflammation and an increased rate of healing."

MIT-based medical scientist Rutledge Ellis-Behnke regards the above Hong Kong group’s research as groundbreaking, saying: “Silver has been used for over a thousand years in traditional Chinese medicine for wound healing, but this is the first time that a hint of the true mechanism has been shown. Silver modifies cytokine production, “leading to reduced inflammation and an increased rate of healing.”

Silver has benefit for external wound healing, but internally, silver increases white cell counts with undetermined effects on the immune system. In an auto-immune disease such as Lupus, increasing the immune function potentially has a negative aspect, which won't be determined short of clinical trials.

For this reason colloidal silver should be in the wait and see category.

Although this is my first post, (my ex-wife had an on again, off again diagnosis of Lupus), one shouldn't accept as Gospel truth, Pell-Mell, the information from a Research Clinics and Hospitals. The Mayo Clinic answer to a question about colloidal silver demonstrates how information can be presented to prove a point of view or bias rather than give a complete picture. Substitute vitamin C for colloidal silver in the third paragraph, and the same negative impression is presented.

I signed up to this site just so I could like your post, Renshen1957!! (And now I'm seeing more great ones below!)

I also did extensive research into Colloidal Silver because I was getting sick so often (bronchitis, infections, etc that would last for ages maybe 5x/yr). I now suspect I have mild lupus (only random and infrequent flare ups) and am about to get tested, etc. But I wanted to see what people were saying about Silver and Lupus.

I started taking CS about 4 years ago, and it STOPPED my bouts of frequent, long infections and illnesses. (Except one random case of pneumonia...) and then I got some digestion issues and got some bad advise and stopped taking it and low and behold, I'm sick! Bronchitis.

I love the research you did and I wanted to post some links I found while doing mine, in case anyone wants to look into it themselves.

Like you fuzzyBunny I signed up so I could Like renshen1957's information-packed post but I must also say thanks for your great information! A friend of mine who is also quadriplegic is in the middle of a string of bladder infections, going from antibiotic to antibiotic. She was so close to using colloidal silver that I recommended but then told me she read the Mayo Clinic nonsense and decided against it.

In the 90s I too was going from bladder infection to bladder infection. But as soon as I tried colloidal silver the UTIs stopped. That was the only clinical proof I needed. From 12-13 antibiotic prescriptions annually down to zero. And it's been almost 3 decades and I'm not blue yet!

Big pharma hates colloidal silver, so do most witch doctors, it hurts their sorcery potion profits.

So true....I have lupus and I have been considering taking silver but I have been reluctant. No doubt the FDA is just another bloated institution. Not saying they have never done anything good but where there are millions of dollars on the table and humans wanting to play God, there's always the human factor of greed. There is always a sellout somewhere.

Yea, CS at 14-25 ppm taken one or 2 teaspoons per day has worked brilliantly for me since Nov 2012. Prior to that I used to get around 4 chest infections / flu like symptom coughs per yer which would typically take over 4 weeks to get over. Anti biotics did not really help. I have not had an infection since Nov 2012! A further side benefit is that my snoring was reduced by 90%. Many of my friends are also getting benefits. There have been no adverse side effects. So I would definitely not agree with the Mayo clinic comments. CS has been my best discovery of the year and I would not hesitate to recommend its use both internally and externally.

I agree Mayo clinics claims are false and no basis for their claims since they have not done the research to make these claims. I would tell my testimony but people would doubt it anyway. They only come on here to doubt. I was one of these people before colloidal silver helped me tremendously. Saved my life to be honest.

Yes! Colloidal Silver was introduced to me as a natural anti-biotic. As synthetics do a # on my immune system. this liquid Silver will kill only the white "infected" cells and leave the healthy red cells to stay strong and do their job w/o interference. I use it as a preventative measure. I Know others who were suffering multi symptoms "of unknown origin" and they felt a difference in energy and health almost immediately. It is important to follow usage instructions carefully....especially the part about taking it for no more than two weeks at a time. You Tube has a whole series on the benefits. Check it out!

Good Thoughts

I have my own kit at home, that I purchased off the internet. It is very expensive at the health store and I can a hundred times as much, for a 4th of the cost. The kit pays for itself in 2 weeks, and the silver last a full year. I make two large jars a week, for myself and my kids. I have not gotten sick and my fatigue is disappearing, since I started 2 weeks ago. My kids and husband were ill, and I did not get it. I started my kids on the silver water and the next day they were feeling better, with in 3 days they were fully back to themselves no illness at all, while my husband did not take it and was sick for almost 3 weeks. I also found out why it is so expensive for a 4oz bottle in our health store's and why some states have made it illegal. It kills over 650 virus's that anti biotic's can't kill period, including one cell bodied bacteria, and fungus's. It is a way to control and even kill the aids virus. Silver water does not interact with any medications either. It is good for stomach issues, skin issues, cancers, and so much more. The FDA does not want people knowing about it, because people like me, won't need their medications anymore..

Try Digestacure, silver colodial and dr Joel Wallach's minerals are all good options. Specially digestacure has cured people with many autoinmune deseases or so i heard. Do not listen to Mayo Clinic. All Doctors and the farma companies do not believe in naturall ways of healing. They believe in synthetic toxic medications.

I would always trust a naturopath more then a doctor. Tell me why after soo much money collected and so many years they never find a cure if anything? they only find toxic treatments which give you new deseases or complications. I am not a doctor but it just makes sence

Yes, Colloidal Silver works great. I used during flu season. I teach at an elementary school. I decide not to take the flu shot this year. I decided to use the CS instead. All of the teacher's in the rooms next to me got sick with the flu or bronchitis. I been round students with the flu and all other types of contagious illness this year. There were several school closed in our area because of the flu. So far I haven't got it. And I don't even take the CS everyday. I would suggest anyone making CS on their own. Only if you really know what you're doing. I purchase mine from internet and other stores. The one I get will not turn you blue and mixed so it will not have any of the other harmful side effects. Oh most of the teachers and students above mentioned had to miss several days even weeks of school. Some had to go to the ER. I must admit, I have felt sick and down, but luckily, no fever and doctor visits. You have to kill and prevent illness, push the illness out of your system as well as build up your body. Here is my protocol: Colloidal Silver-to kill and prevent; distilled water-to eliminate (push out of your body) {distilled water push out only the bad germs, not the good ones}; multi-vitamin and vitamin C to build up your body. No sugars or greasy foods either.
