Hi Lucy,,How recently were you Diagnosed?

I know myself and alot of people with Lupus suffer with extreme fatigue and joint and muscle pain and even if i was 10years younger(i am 47) i would not have the energy to run for a hobby. My main things are now to be able to find enough energy to get up and do normal things around the house,,eg,,clean,,iron ,,do my hair to look decent,,all these things zap my energy! i say if you feel you have energy to run then make the most of it and go for it!!Were does your SLE mainly affect you? WE all have good and also alot of bad days and have to grab what we can from the good days.

I am thinking you are very newly diagnosed,am i right ?Make the most of the energy if you have some!!Go you!!! :)

Thanks very much for replying,Yeah I was diagnosed last July,I do get tired very easily but at the moment my pain is under control most of the time and I really just need to try and build my stamina back up after my bad year last year as my symptoms came on very very fast and I was lucky in having quite a quick diagnosis of sle. I'm wanting to shift the weight that the steroids put on as well but I do take it easy and don't over do it and certainly don't do it if I'm having a flare up.

hi there i have had lupus 24 years and i know i could not do that, but hey you go for it, my advise would be if you get tired listen to what your body tell you and rest up, its nice to hear something a little more postive.

stay well

I've had lupus for 13 years now and was told to rest, to me that did my joints no good at all, I just stiffened up and was more uncomfortable, I believe that you should keep your joints mobile. However, you should listen to your body when it's tired and only you know that. Exercise also releases endorphins which is good for the mind. I know there are times when I can exercise and definitely times when I can't. Running is not really my thing, I do feel that pounding on hard pavements will take its toll on your knees. If you do decide to do it, ensure that you get a really good pair of cushioned trainers.

I do Pilates which I find is relaxing for both mind and body, go to the gym so that I can go at my own pace on the treadmill and machines and when I am feeling very well Zumba is a lot of fun.

Good luck!

Hi Lucy. I have had SLE since I was little and spent many days as a child and teen and adult, figuring out when to be active and when not to be. Even on my great days, if I played or ran or walked too long I eventually paid for it. However!! : ) I was doing great in 2006 through 2008 and began slowly walking a little each day, then I would walk for longer periods of time, then faster - you get the drift.. slowly I worked my way into early morning or late afternoon (based on the weather channel's lowest UVA-UVB for that day) 7 miles a day. I I never did run though - running was way too hard on my body even though I sometimes felt as though I had that glass ceiling over my head.. I found peace with walking. Sadly at the age of 30 lupus attacked much more then ever before and I stopped working in 2009 and have been down for a while. I was able to get SSI and have been taking it easy. I just now started walking again, very little but loving it.. considering i was with a walker and cane for a long time. Dont let anyone tell you "no" .. SLE is different for every one. I dont classify any one with SLE as mild moderate or severe because I think we all fall into one of those catagories many times through out our lives with SLE. Walking is WONDERFUL for SLE and many specialist will tell you to walk if and when you are able too.. the key is balance. I struggle finding it, maybe you will have better luck! AND dont forget to baby yourself.. baths help too! Good luck to you Lucy!
