may sound stupid and have been dreading askiing..... - LUPUS UK
may sound stupid and have been dreading askiing.... alcohol or no alcohol?. thats my question.
I'm curious too. My Consultant was vague, said everything in moderation.
Keep to the recommended safe limits for women in the general population ie no more than 14 units a week. That is the absolute maximum. There are about one and a half units in a small 125 ml glass of wine or 1 unit in half a pint of ordinary strength beer per day. It is also recommended that one has alcohol free days too.
As far as Lupies are concerned I know that one shouldn't drink when on Methotrexate and also have to be careful if taking Warfarin. Because our livers are having to cope with getting rid of all the drugs in our system, if we drink too much that puts more strain on the liver.
For men the maximum safe limit per week is 21 units.
I hope that helps.
Hi Jax
Defo in moderation. I find with my pain alcohol sometimes help with the pain & better than the painkillers. It also depends on the medications your on I suppose & all the meds I'm on arn't too bad.
Hope this is of help to you.
All the best

Hi Jax, not sure what meds you're on but I have a drink most weekends and have been diagnosed with SLE for about 20 years now, do suffer a bit for it next day but that same as before SLE. Gotta live a litte but everyone's different so just trial and error and see how you feel and if it's worth it, it is for me lol x
Hi jax, not sure you want to hear this but have been unable to have a drink for many years now........my face gets extremely red and skin gets red and itchy (most unpleasant) but everybody is right, you can try and see how you get on if it works great stuff and if not then join the rest of us.....good luck and if its ok have one for me x
A lot depends on your medication, shouldnt really drink alcohol if you are on Warfarin, I am also on Buprenorphine patches and not supposed to drink alcohol on these. Need to check your meds.
I had to stop drinking initially on Hydrochloroquine - made me feel awful that night, almost flu symptoms, but after a couple of months I tried it again and I was absolutely fine! Was very pleased. As many people would say, it doesn't half help sometimes when everything hurts!
I have the odd glass/bottle of wine, it def helps me settle on a bad night... My meds all said alcahol ok in modeeration, (tho painkillers said no cos mayincrease the effects) so I dont drink if im taking too many tramadol... I do find some days if I have a drink my face flares up but as long as you dont overdo it and if it affects you take it steady you should be fine to enjoy a tipple x x
