Shingles vaccination. I’ve been offered this vaccination but as this is a live vaccine, is it a wise move ?

Anyone who is immunocompromised or on immunosuppressive drugs ie entitled to the Shingrix non-live shingles vaccine.

I think the guidance is in here somewhere

assets.publishing.service.g...

but i is mentioned on the second page of this

If you are immunosuppressed the normal shingles vaccine is a no-no as it’s a live vaccine. If you’re not on immune supressing meds yet then you should be fine.

The shingrix vax is only available to the over 70’s who are immunosuppressed. My GP had the surgery vaccine nurse look into it for me. There is no implication that it’s going to be offered to any other group any time soon.

I have a fantastic GP surgery who even gave me the first covid vaccine earlier that I was due (I’m in my 40’s so was quite far down the list) by putting me on their priority list simply because I due to start immune suppression, so I have no reason to doubt them. I was diagnosed around the same time as the vaccine came out so hadn’t been added to any lists at that point.

The info listed below seems to back up what they said.

You may have a surgery who are willing to bend the rules and give the shingrix vax anyway.

I would double check with your surgery.

hello - it was my reaction to the live Shingles vaccine 7 years ago that led to my diagnosis of Lupus and Sjogren’s - LIVE is the key word. Fine if you have a working immune system - poison if not. I was seriously ill after a flu vaccine too - Covid jab is NOT live therefore works for us. I take 200mg of Aciclovir daily to keep my shingles at bay. If it does break thru during a flare I double the dose for a couple of days. Hope this helps.

Because you can get shingles more than once............I have had it 3 times! Luckily I have now had the shingrix vaccination, 2 doses 8 weeks apart. Well worth it.

thank you. Advice from my consultant was to have Shingrix - not the live one. Now booked in with gp surgery.
