ANA Help!

Hi everyone, I’m new here so hopefully I’ve come to the right place! I am 18 now but for over 10 years I have been going back and forth to various doctors due to aches, pains, rashes and stiffness.

Long story short, yesterday I saw my rheumatologist and when I discussed my blood tests with her, she ignored my ANA result. Although it came back ‘normal’ the lab left a note saying it had multiple nuclear dots and to speak to a doctor. My doctor said it was insignificant and not to be noted, but it’s bothering me! I dunno, if it isn’t significant, why has the lab flagged it? I’ve had this test done about 5 times and each time the result has been the same.

Any advice or signposts to places that might help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Achyjoints2021

According to Dr Google, multiple nuclear spotting is common in primary biliary cholangitis and, although it's an autoimmune condition, it's often accompanied by a negative ANA, and symptoms include aches and pains, dry eyes and itchiness. However, it's also very uncommon in young people. Combined with my own ignorance, I am slightly reluctant to raise this, as it's likely a red herring.

However, you've clearly already been anxious enough about your health that you've posted here, as well as having had no less than 5 ANA tests already. So I'm thinking maybe that ship has sailed....(the red herring fishing fleet maybe? My metaphors are getting mixed here.... :D )

Anyway, on balance, I would be inclined to have a long think about what your doctor(s) have already said about what is causing your symptoms. The chances are they have the expertise to figure out the cause and have given you sound advice on what needs to be done. If you remain anxious, maybe the next time you speak with your rheumatologist (or whoever), keep pressing them for a satisfying explanation. It may be "dunno", but I'd also ask specifically, "How would you rule out primary biliary cholangitis?".

Let us know how you get on. x
