I can tell you I went a bit mad on the diet thing when I first got diagnosed e.g. I went on the autoimmune protocol. I lost a fair bit of weight - happy days - but I'm not sure it helped too much. I'm much more relaxed these days but do try and eat as much veg as possible and stay off processed sugars.

I know going gluten free can help and sometimes, some of us we react to foods, so you can keep a food diary to see what you might be reacting to. But it's important to pay attention to other things too - pacing, alleviating stress, taking your medications, getting a healthy diet, gentle exercise, happiness. A good book is Despite Lupus.

Sadly alcohol is a no, no for me partly because of the medication I’m on. But if I do indulge with a very small glass of wine or bubbly for a special occasion I take Milk Thistle for a few days afterwards which keeps my liver right. Fizzy drinks are also a no, no but fruit juices (I dilute them a little) are good. I steer clear of pork and pork products eg bacon, pork sausages etc as they make me quite ill, but lean beef once per week is okay. Oily fish like salmon is very good and I also take Omega 3,6 & 9 (all in the one capsule) daily. Other nights of the week I have vegetarian meals made with quorn mince or soya chunks in place of beef or chicken. But as Treetop says, if you keep a food diary you will soon discover what foods suit you and which are like poison. Hope this helps.

Hi, I put on a lot of weight due to exhaustion and lockdown - I was also trying to comfort eat and drink my way out of my symptoms which just made me feel any worse. I started the year at 13 stone 12, the heaviest I had ever been. The pain and discomfort in my knees had not eased with any of the meds Rheumy gave me and he rather bluntly told me that my only other option was to lose weight. I started the 'Fast 800' diet in January, which is high protein and good fats/carbs - very similar to the Mediterranean diet that is recommended for Lupus. It is restricted on calories, but I didn't feel hungry? I did it for 12 weeks and lost 20 pounds. Some lose much more weight in 12 weeks but I had a symptoms relapse and struggled to get through the days but kept at it - Once I could see the weight starting to go, it made me more determined. Plus, my knees gradually started to improve (especially as I'd also started physio). I'm sticking to the same principles and losing around 1 to 2 pounds a week. I'm looking forward to telling the rhuemy what I've lost. I also started to take Azothioprine which has helped symptoms so I'm now also able to start some exercise again. If you're interested in the Fast 800, or the 5:2 diet (all by Dr Michael Moseley) then there are some great books on Amazon and a really useful Facebook support page. Good luck :)

I have controlled my lupus through a whole food plant based diet. I’ve been able to jog, play soccer and exercise like before my diagnose. I give myself a treat once in a while, though if I start eating processed foods and animal protein for more than the 10-20% of my diet inflammation and all lupus symptoms come back. If you are not ready to cut on animal products, at least limit them because they have inflammatory compounds. And simply try to eat lots of fruit (not in juice) and vegetables. The insulin spike of fruit juice also promotes inflammation. You should try to reach an intake of 10 portions pf fruits and veggies everyday. Besides that try to include ground raw flaxseeds (helps with joint pain), ginger, turmeric and pepper. Turmeric has proven to help with stiffness and swelling. And try to cut out all sodas and processed foods. They are highly inflammatory and very poor nutritiously.
