Allergies, Lupus and the vaccine

Hi everyone

I know there are already many posts about the vaccine but I'm specifically wanting to ask if anyone with severe allergies has had it and how they responded?

I am quite reassured from the perspective of my Lupus and other autoimmune diseases about getting it but I have severe allergies (anaphylactic reactions) to septrin and nuts, so I'm really concerned about this and would love to hear from someone else with severe allergies and Lupus who's had the jab and been fine. My jab is on Sunday.

Hi there. I was in a similar position as I’m allergic to many antibiotics and other drugs and anaphylactic with opioids and opioid derivatives. I spoke to my GP and consultant and both investigated for me looking at the ingredients of both vaccines and checking in with the updated guidance on allergic reactions to both. I have never had an anaphylactic reaction to a vaccine, just the normal side effects-this is important. The outcome was they recommended the Astrazenica vaccine which I had on Wednesday. The doctor who gave it me went through my allergies with me and double checked with the Doctor in charge of the session. I was asked to sit with him straight after the vaccine but everything was fine. Since then I’ve had a sore red arm, a runny nose and a headache - all very normal side effects. I’ve drunk lots of water, taken it easy and had paracetamol. The feeling of relief after shielding for so long is brilliant and now I feel I’ve supported the NHS and am looking forward ( in time - still have to shield for now) to hugs with my daughters ( my eldest is an assistant head in a Primary School and the youngest is in HR in a secondary school) I won’t lie I was VERY nervous but I focused on the positives and did some breathing exercises. I’m off for my jab💉😷today ! Can’t wait! Recommended by my Dermatologist.. fed up of shielding now but God Bless our NHS.. I too have antibiotic allergies and am on steroids,mepaprin etc etc !

Thanks so much for your reply! I've only just read this so I'm not sure I'll be able to contact my GPs or rheumatology since it's the weekend and my jab is tomorrow but looking at others posts that they go through allergies with you beforehand I'm guessing if they are giving the Pfizer jab where I'm going and they think I should have the AstraZeneca one then they'll just ask me to come back another time, which is fine with me. I just can't wait to get it over and done with now.

I hope it isn't too long before you get to see your daughters. It's so hard, isn't it? I'm really missing my sister and my nephews. Hopefully things will get better and better now we're all getting vaccinated.

I went for my first jab yesterday . When I got there I was asked a series of questions, one of which was ' Have you ever had a serious allergic reaction to anything ? To which the answer was yes - I have twice had bad reactions to anaesthetic. The jab they were giving yesterday was the Pfizer one & they told me I couldn't have that one but have rebooked me for Monday morning for the Astro Zeneca . Fingers crossed for Take Two 🤞

I had an allergic reaction to Rituximab and my rheumatologist has given me the same advice to not have the Pfizer but AZ is fine. I have my appointment tonight.

Thanks so much HazelW, that's super helpful, as I don't think that I'm going to be able to speak to my GP surgery or rheumatology with it being the weekend and having my jab tomorrow. It's reassuring to know the nurses will be equipped to advise me on the best route and I'm happy to rebook and come back if necessary. Fingers crossed and good luck for Take Two 🤞🏾
