Any ideas for bleeding eye please??

Happy new year everyone!

Anyone got any ideas about eye bleeding/ inflammation please or had this before?

I’ve had quite a few eye problems with the lupus and Sjögrens last couple of years but this might just be a benign burst blood vessel? Anyone else had one like this and it doesn’t need treatment?

Have had scleritis before but that was worse pain. This is just burning running eyes (both) and a big headache. I have just dropped steroids and my body never likes that... 🙄

Thank you! X

Poor you. I don’t know what it is, but it is best to touch best with the nurse or doctor, particularly since you also have the headache.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Melba1 - please call 111 and discuss.... straight away. That would be my advice. I do hope you get some comforting advice but I really wouldn't wait or feel "bad" about calling them. Please let us know how you get on. Take careDx

Hi Melba1

As the others have said, it's best to get this checked out if you're at all worried but thought I'd let you know that I get these regularly, in both eyes.

I've had them checked out by my GP, optician & rheumatologist and nobody seems to be concerned about them.

My optician said that he sees a pattern of patients with them due to atmospheric pressure! Not sure that's what's happening to me though :)

They do look a bit grim at the time, mine are generally painless (and obviously I'd be more concerned if you had pain!) Sometimes i can feel a stinging pain as it happens. More often than not, I'm surprised to find one when I look in the mirror.

They're supposed to clear up within two weeks, mine often fade quicker than that, maybe changing colour (yellow) as they fade.

I'd keep any pics to show at your next appointment.

So maybe for peace of mind, get it checked out but as long as they tell you it's ok, try not to worry too much - and honestly, I've has scores of them over the years.

Take care xx

Hi Melba1 😊🌿🌸🦋

I agree with DJK99 call your emergency services. My mom was on steroids and was warned that coming off can produce bleeds.

Your eyes cannot be replaced your headache might signal something serious is going on.

An ounce of caution is worth more than a pound of cure.

I just said a special prayer for you.

Best wishes for a good outcome.

EJ 😊🤗💗😘🙏🕊🌿🌸🦋

Hi melba.I get these sometimes I get a sharp pain and feel it other times I wake up with one like I did on Christmas day 🙄

Subconjunctival hemorrhage happens when a blood vessel leaks or breaks just under the conjunctiva. When this happens, blood gets trapped in the blood vessel or between the conjunctiva and white part or your eye. Eye bleeding makes the blood vessel very visible or causes a red patch on your eye.13 Dec 2019

Eye Bleeding: Types, Symptoms

Drs have seen mine and noted it but were not concerned. I dont bother about them now but if you are worried contact them even if it's just for reassurance xx

Oooh, oh, Melba, uveitis can be part of ankylosing spondylitis but I guess if you had that, you'd know about it...this (medicinenet.com/spondylitis... says steroids is the answer for AI-related irisitis but that's not what you want to hear :-/

Willing a swift, med-free remission from a bleedin' eye....and a very Happy and Healthy New Year! xxx

Hope it's not serious but please get this checked, just because someone else had an eye bleed that was not serious doesn't mean that yours is the same.

Dear Melba

I also have lupus/ sjowgrens . I’ve had a couple of eye bleeds that did look just like yours , I only noticed when looking in the mirror when waking up . I did remember a gritty popping pressure in eye while waking up . My doctor was not concerned , I did not have a headache at the time . I would suggest calling the doctor to be on the safe side , as you say you have headache and I did not .

I also have vasculitis , I’ve not had any eye bleeds for a while now .

At least call 111 for a call back for peace of mind .

Hope this helps .

🦋❤️

Thinking only of the more concerning possibilities that it could be I’d say Vasculitis should be excluded especially if you have a bad headache if your vision is affected. I’ve got Sjogrens and I don’t get this but I do get this issue where my eyes lock shut after sleep - mainly one eye. I can only open them manually - which occasionally leads to follicle infections in eyelashes. The neurologist says this is called awakening ptosis and has just had me tested for Myasthena Gravis which he says I don’t have (never thought I did!).

Other thing my rheum is ruling out due to nose and ear changes, by referring me to ENT, is some kind of Vasculitis eg Relapsing Polychondritis which can cause red eye due to affecting the cartilage in the eyes, nose, ears and throat and ribs etc. It’s very rare and no tests for it but it can cause lung problems and is treated using high dose steroids and immunesuppressants. I don’t think I have it but it is one of the SS associated kinds of Vasculitis so worth looking up just to see that you don’t have other symptoms. Xx

I’ve had this a few times and was told by my own optician to go to Specsavers as they are allowed to do the necessary NHS checks. They ask about health problems and check your eyes for related problems. No appointment was necessary. In my case they thought it was just caused by the pressure of coughing. It gradually cleared up in 2/3 weeks. Hope you’re better soon x

There may be a local opticians who has an emergency eye clinic .Our local opticians saw me as an NHS patient so no payment needed and got me an appointment at our hospital. My problem was different but needed immediate treatment .You may find 111 will get you an ophthalmic appointment at the hospital near you.

These clinics seem to run at weekends as well as weekdays.

I had to go as I was shielding and was worried about going to hospital but it was necessary .

Good luck.

Oh bless you. It looks so painful. I am so sorry. Please listen to others here and seek advice. It may be that you get reassurances and no treatment but the headaches may mean you have something that needs investigating. I hope you get the help you need and feel better xxx

Thanks so much everyone for your helpful kind responses. I managed to get hold of a lupus specialist and sent the photos and she thought most likely a burst blood vessel that even ‘normal’ people can get but also might be scleritis on top of it which I’ve had before. As I also feel much more ‘lupusy’ today and my other eye is red now too and vasculitis/bleeding etc all over, presume it’s a lupus flare too 🙄 We don’t get much time free from lupus symptoms sometimes! So I’ve increased steroids as that usually works for me but was hoping to get lower steroids as my steroid face barely fits through doors 🐷🤣 🌝

Hope everyone has a healthier 2021!! Xx

Really glad you got through to your doctor. We have all been concerned, I know. Hope the steroid increase helps.

Get some rest and check back in!

Hi Melba1

Like Happykins, I get these regularly (maybe once or twice a month) and have followed up several times in the early days with various doctors and my optician but no one seemed at all concerned. Got fed up asking only to be told "it's just a haematoma".

Mine generally clear up within a week or two but if you're worried about it, it might be a good idea to get it checked out. 😊
