Bone marrow biopsy for chronic low wbc

Hi all, been seeing rheumatologist for a while now due to suspected lupus. Not an official diagnosis yet. Referred to Haematologist for low wbc a while ago. Wasn't worried as thought it was auto immune related but they send me for a bone marrow biopsy and now I'm worried about the results. Anyone else had a similar procedure due to lupus or auto immunity??

Hi,have no specialist knowledge, but do have lupus.

I have loads of symptoms,,pain around lungs/ chest pain / shortness of breath. / delayed emptying of bladder/ sore toes.

Have had loads of tests to exclude other causes rather than lupus.

Perhaps they are doing this test to exclude stuff.

I don’t know.

You have to ask questions . I ask all the time,I’m sure they’re sick of me,but. I really don’t care.

Take care

Hi Wadlow. I’ve recently been told I have AI most likely lupus too. I have low wbc and platelets. Have seen haematologist and rheumi and recently put on hydroxyquine .Haematologist wants to monitor me on this for 3-4 month then reassess. But has said if the bloods are still low she will want to do bone marrow biopsy too. Apparently I also have a fast turnover of these cells which could indicate something going on in bone marrow but she thinks unlikely.

For me , it seems they are just being thorough in checking everything. Hope it’s the same for you too. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for ur reply. Yeah they keep bringing me back every few months to check bloods too. The more I read up about it the more it appears that low blood counts are relatively normal for lupus. Hope all works out for u too x

Wardlow, I’m so sorry. That would make anyone nervous. But try to take a deep breath and relax. Stress will make you iller than most people and it won’t change the test results (not in a good way, anyhow.) Like SashaT64 says, they may be trying to be as thorough as possible. Let’s all hope that’s all it is, and in either case, your results come back that there’s no problem. 🙏wishing you all the best.

Yes. Persistent low wbc. Rheumy sent me to hematologist as she thought Plaquenil should have brought it back up. Hematologist thought maybe some blood cancer. Had bone marrow biopsy and it didn’t show cancer. Thank goodness

Thanks for ur reply. That's brilliant that it wasn't blood cancer. Hopefully mine will be the same. Thanks for sharing

Hi all, just thought I would update this in case it helps somebody else. So biopsy results weren't that clear. I was expecting it to be either u have blood cancer or u don't. Seems to be that my bone marrow is not as healthy as it should be or working as it should be and wbc is 0.8 which is quite low. Had to actually ask if there were any abnormal cells to which the answer was thankfully no 🙏🙏

I was told to go get flu vaccine and pneumonia vaccine and more bloods taken and if I get sick and have a temperature to go straight to a and e 🤔 excuse my ignorance but is this a normal occurance in lupus?

I don’t know about the bone marrow biopsy but my lymphocytes have been low for the last three months. I was told that it’s common with lupus.

Hope they sort it out soon xx
