Odourless curtains?

Hello all. Can anyone recommend BLACKOUT CURTAINS that block sunlight (cloth, hanging, not blinds). What I am looking for is material that doesn´t smell since I have bad chemical sensitivity.

If you Google “blackout curtain lining” I’m sure there must be a company that will send you a sample if you phone & explain.

You might want to put the curtains outside in the sun for a few days to off-gass. I reacted to a UV umbrella and then decided this year to have my cousin put it in her yard for a week. It worked!

B&Q - John Lewis - but the advice to hang them outside is excellent

You have my sympathy Pink123ice.

AgedCrone’s advice about requesting a sample is a great idea! I too am affected by chemical sensitivity. I did a similar thing with a Christmas item I wanted to purchase last year. I contacted the supplier and explained my problem. It was sent to me with the reassurance that it didn’t have a smell as such, but was guaranteed that, if I was affected, I could return and have a full refund.

Also, putting outside to ‘off gas’ is another sound piece of advice that helps! I do this regularly as I have the nose of a bloodhound and can smell aromas no one else seems able to.

I hope you are successful finding the blackout curtains - it is such a pain to source anything these days that doesn’t pong! 🤥

Sue.

As I couldn't find anything decent pre-made, I made my own blackouts, using good quality blackout material from the local fabric shop. I can be very sensitive to things but didn't react at all, which was great. If you can't find anything pre-made, and are well enough to make your own, then I can recommend.

If you are considering DIY here is the method I used: mine aren't curtains, but two panels (my window has two panes of glass, intersected by frame) that I put up at night using heavy duty Velcro which is stuck to the back top and side hems of the panels and around the outer edges of my window frame (top and sides, don't bother with the bottom of the frame). To make the panels I cut two rectangles, sized to cover both panes of glass and to the far sides of the adjoining frame, plus allowing for a simple hem on all sides of each panel. I then made an additional 'lip' which I attached to one panel, where it overlaps the other panel - to ensure good light block-out. So at night I simply stick the Velcro on the panels to the Velcro on the frame and I have very good light blockage.

I got some brilliant black out and heat resistant curtains from John Lewis. They are plain and hang behind your regular curtains, kind of like s loose lining. They keep both heat and light out as I am super sensitive to both and am housebound in the summer as a result.
