Almost everyone puts on weight with pred, especially long term and/or higher doses. Everyone on my home forum is on pred, some at doses over 30mg/day. Many have managed to avoid weight gain by cutting carbs drastically - pred changes how your body processes carbs and that is what leads to weight gain and, potentially, developing pred-induced diabetes. It reduces the swings in blood sugar levels, that helps reduce the cravings that sent so many people eat all the time and a lot. Pred also leads to fluid retention so cutting the salt in your diet is also important. Taking all processed carbs out is easy - cook from scratch with fresh ingredients and avoid too much fruit (healthy carbs but still carbs), eating veggies instead.
I gained the best part of 40lbs because of inactivity due to the illness and pred. I cut carbs drastically and lost 35lbs of them, slowly but surely. I'm still overweight but not as much as I was at 5'1". You are still the same person underneath - and there is something you can try to take control. That is up to you.
it's a horrible feeling isn't it? I ballooned and didn't realise I was piling on the weight until I couldn't wear my watch. My cheeks looked like a hamsters and I went from about 13 stone to over 20 [my scales stopped at 20] I would eat and think just another slice or one more biscuit not realising how big I was getting. it was really hard going out thinking everyone would be looking at me and judging me for being so big. I did lose the weight when I stopped the steroids but it took a while, recognising what is happening and why can help you start to lose some of the weight. look objectively at your meal sizes and ask yourself whether it is the same amount you would have eaten before the steroids and try to eat normal amounts for you. I know the steroids can make you feel starving so get something really low calorie like celery, carrots or something and nibble on those when you get hungry. watch what you drink too as there can be a lot of calories in drinks. good luck
