Antibiotics

Hi everyone, I have reacurrant chest infections for the last 3 years. I saw an excellent consultant on chest problems he found a bug I seem to grow so doesn’t work on all antibiotics so he listed 3 different ones to try. Last year I did a 3 month low dose it was the only way it was controlled. I have had a week course this month as it is back again but it didn’t work not enough dosage gp wasn’t helpful. Went back to day as been really unwell for a week symptoms worse. She has given me another antibiotic that was suggested by the consultant it’s amoxicillin but the dosage is extremely high. 12 x 500mg a day split into 6 at a time. As anyone else taken this amount the chemist said he was concerned as it can effect the stomach anyone got any tips. I know to take with food. Just looking at them freaks me the out. 😱😱 any help appreciated. 👍👍

YIKES Gillyg...i sure do understand your concern....you probably remember i’ve had a lifetime of what all my consultants in all clinics call v early onset AID + PID (anitbody deficiency disease) related recurring complex persistence pattern respiratory tract infections (which happen in lots of my other body systems too). So i do v much relate to your situation (the nhs took decades to figure out the causes underlying my predisposition infections - which began many years before i was prescribed immunosuppressants)

For now my one comment/question is:

Have they tried you on coamoxiclav, cause this is often more effective than amoxiclav...which could mean your dose could be less huge?

I won’t go on & on re the reasons i’m especially asking this question, but do let me know if you’d like me to explain further...

No I haven’t been prescribed that one I believe due to the type of bug it is. It is HAEMOPHILIS INFLUENZAE it will not respond to many antibiotics so have been having Doxycycline a low dose for 3 months at a time it is the only way I have been able to dampen it. I had to pay privately to get this answer two years ago. They thought maybe I should try another one in case I am getting too used to it. I just didn’t realise how many it would be until the chemist seemed alarmed. Thanks for your reply. 👍👍

Gosh Gilly...

I’m no expert, but for what it’s worth:

you are prescribed straight amoxicillin & the thing is that coamoxicillin is just an even more effective version of amoxicillin...

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amo...

my version of PID antibody deficiency disease means i have no defenses at all to haemophilus & pneuumonia & cannot make antibodies in response to vaccines...and so far immunology’s 2x daily coamoxi 625mg has protected me from resipratory infections (in several years have only had 1 of these break-through the coamoxi: pneumonia last spring...which immunology cleared up by stopping my coamoxi & putting me on 10 days 2 x daily clarithromycin 500mg....i always refuse doxycyclin because it has a strong official reputation for diagreeing with SLE patients). Anyway, am still on daily coamoxi ongo8ng and due to start IgG replacement therapy....
