My friend's 10 year old daughter has lupus and has very painful knees at night which actually wake her a couple of times in the night. She thinks it might be restless legs- any one else had similar and any tips on how to relieve the pain please?

NB she had an MRI and was told it is not connected to lupus and not arthritis, no treatment was suggested other than ibuprofen...:(

Hello Lipstick9

That doesn't sound typical for restless leg syndrome (see here rls-uk.org/rls-in-children/ ) My daughter was woken by painful joints at night when she was little for several years. It became so common for a whole that I learned to massage her calves and ankles in my sleep! It took a long time to work out what it was but it turned out to be hypermobility. During the day, she was very active and probably over-extended her joints, so that at night she got the rebound soreness from that. It was worse during growth spurts, and has almost gone now she is a grown woman. No treatment, I'm afraid - just taking care when exercising to protect joints from hyperextension. x

My wife who has sle also has twitchy legs most noticeable at night. The Consultant prescribed garberpentine which works a treat.

Restless legs is entirely different to joint pain, it's the overwhelming need to keep moving the legs no matter how tired you are. I've had it, and it's very different to joint pain which I also have.

I've had restless legs my entire life and it runs in the family. Mine is also accompanied by aching. It gets better when I am stable with iron and magnesium. Maybe a good multivitamin with the right balance of minerals would help?
