Just a quickie. Myself and my fiancé are trying to get pregnant and I’ve been told by friends to take Folic Acid.

I’ve been diagnosed with Lupus, raynaulds and sjrogens for over a year and I’m on Hydroxychloroquine (400mg) a day.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t take folic? X

Hi JennaeClifford,

We published a booklet on lupus and pregnancy which discusses taking folic acid before pregnancy, to read the booklet please click here lupusuk.org.uk/wp-content/u... - It is important to discuss this with your rheumatologist to ensure you receive the correct advice and treatment for a safe pregnancy.

Here is the link to our blog article on 'lupus and pregnancy': lupusuk.org.uk/lupus-and-pr...

Best wishes, Chanpreet.

Before you become pregnant ask your GP, who will know what meds you can take, when you are pregnant talk to your obstetrician.

Thank your friends for their advice- and move on. You need proper medical advice, not well meaning suggestions from friends.

I'm on hydroxychloriquine at the same dosage as you're on. I'm also on methotrexate injections. The methotrexate destroys the folic acid in your blood so you have to take folic acid tablets, therefore you shouldn't have any problems taking it. To be on the safe side you'd be best to check with your Dr first.

Yes I’ve taken folic acid and even had to take a high dose folic acid at one point after a fetal abnormality for the next pregnancy.

Check with ur rheum as I think I came off Hydrox whilst I was pregnant but I don’t think u have to I’m not sure? It’s always good to let them know u are trying as they will prob want u under obstetrics care as soon as possible

Good luck! X
