I had to appeal to get my badge and the person who came to assess me was so shocked that I didn’t get passed on my initial application.

Can’t remember too many details, but taking breaks if you get out of breath helps and the amount you can walk is the key thing, can’t remember if it is 20 metres. I suggest you check online to see what the rules are, cos they change all the time. I I have an issue getting into a car as my legs don’t dent well but that is not part of the criteria for getting one.

Found this link which may help:

I’m sure you’ll get lots of help on this great site.

I had no problem getting my badge. I had a short interview where they filled in a short form, and it’s was sent out in post. Hope you don’t have any hassle. Good luck 👍

The Dr I saw was very understanding and listened carefully when I explained about how Lupus had affected me. I was also asked about my walking and how my illness had affected this and I really had to go into detail - it seemed to me that this is what they were most interested in. Take some notes with you, I found this really helpful as my mind went blank as soon as I went into the Dr's office!!.

If its possible I would take someone with you, whether its a family member or just a friend for moral support.

I do hope all goes well for you on Saturday xxx

KatieRL’s reply is good.

Take a notebook and someone with you.

The other thing I forgot to say is do not volunteer any information, they try and get you to feel comfortable with them and then you let your guard down.

Only reply to their questions and try not to get into conversation too much.

Good luck on Saturday and let us know how you get on.

I'm suprisesd to hear of people having assessments, I applied for one for my elderly dad 3 years ago, just filled in forms online, and I just had to do it again to renew it. No assessment necessary.

Incidently, we recently found out that blue badge holders get a free pass on some tolls, very useful as we live near the Severn crossing, I don't know if this is widely known, but I'm telling everyone I can.

Good luck with your assessment, good advice hear as always. 🍀

I had my first assessment just over 3 years ago, filled the forms in and sent them off, then got turned down, Scleroderma was unknown by them, don’t know if that was the reason why, then I appealed and a man visited me at home so see how mobile I was and said he was surprised I’d been turned down, fortunately he turned things around for me and I got my badge. Reapplied again recently and paid £10, new badge was issued. I was concerned that my badge hadn’t arrived a couple of days before the old one had expired so I rang the helpline and they said there was so much fraud with blue badges that they never send them out to arrive ahead of the due date.
