Hoarse after stress?

Hi all. It's been awhile so hope everyone is doing well (or the best you can!). So, I had an experience lately that has only happened to me once before, many moons ago. I was in a very stressful situation at work. Granted we were all sleep deprived, had been working too many hours and lots of travel. But this one night, my boss was giving me an extra hard time (fog had kicked in, so I was rambling a bit which upset him). As the hours went on, I started to get the typical pain and my rash surfaced within hours (boo!). What was new tho was my muscles started twitching and shaking. It's like I lost control of them. It looked like I was freezing cold when actually the room was really hot. It was my arms and my legs. At the same time I started losing control of my voice. I could talk but I was so hoarse people were stuggling to understand me. After 4 asks, my boss finally let me leave so I could go rest and get my steriods (I keep a stash on hand to knock down an acute flare). I followed up with my doc who had some fancy name for the muscle issues and he said my hoarseness was prob stress induced, but that I did have the start of a mouth ulcer. Very early and treatable.

It blows my mind that just a few days of physical and emotional stress could break me down. I had been stable for a few months now. Still have 2/7 bad days, but better than none at all.

Has this happened to anyone else? Losing control of my muscles was really scary.

Yes stress is a wonderful thing it can be helpful, also too much can cause problems. Good actors want the adrenaline rush for a fine performance, too much and it’s no voice; stage fright! Best wishes Kevin

My voice gets hoarse sometimes for no apparent reason. I have primary sjogrens and at first I thought maybe you did too...till I read your post

Do I think stress can cause it yes I do. I find having conversations stressful because I know my voice might give out, its very frustrating, especially when you're with people who dont understand whats happening. Havent suffered the problem with muscles apart from fatigue that makes them ache and feel weak, again down to immune problems. Lupus had me with awful night sweats, hot one minute cold the next, again made worse when I was under stress....hydroxy has helped with that...

Some days my voice is fine others its a struggle to talk, I sound hoarse all the time. I used to get a lot of mouth ulcers till I was referred to a dental hoapital where sjogrens was confirmed. I was prescribed Difflam mouthwash and thats helped a lot, as soon as a sore appears I use it. Also have BioXtra toothpaste and mouth wash on prescription

Have you been tested for sjogrens? just a thought and something you might want to check out?

Yes, have had issues with both. However, I was never provided with a name/diagnosis for the muscle weakness. Any chance you could follow-up with your doc to pinpoint the fancy name he told you? Would love to have a name for my doctor.

what name was given to your Muscle weakness?? was it Dermatomyosistis or Polymiositis?? Something like that?? I never could pronounce or spell it correctly(I was tested for it)....My voice has been sounding off(hoarse) for about the last 10 months....I was DX'd this past September...I KNEW my hoarse voice meant something..didn't think Lupus though....it was my CRAZY HUGE RAH that got my drs attention....

It wasn’t myositis. I had that in the early stages. This was more like uncontrollable spasms but of the big limbs with weakness. I emailed him to ask about the hoarseness and to see what he called the muscle symptoms.

I thought about it and asked my family. They said I’ve been getting more hoarse over the years but it seems to get much worse when I’m under any kind of stress.

I’ll post when I’ve heard back from doc.

I get hoarse too! I’m a

high stress person anyhow. Never thought it was due

to my lupus. Wow. Thanks for sharing
