Hi there, I've recently been diagnosed with SLE and sjögens and I got given a lot of information rather quickly. Can I just ask one question. I'm on birth control and my Dr told me to come off of it but does he mean immediately or after my pack finishes? Sorry if anyone's offended but I just need to know what I'm taking and when x

Welcome to the community forum, I hope that you find it a helpful place for support and information.

I'm afraid that we are not medically trained so cannot answer your question about contraception. Are you able to call/email your doctor for clarification? If not, a nurse or your pharmacist may be able to guide you?

Women with lupus are advised to avoid contraception containing oestrogen die to the increased risk of thrombosis (especially in those with antiphospholipid antibodies) and the possibility of flares.

Barrier methods or progesterone only contraception are recommended. These include the oral progesterone-only (mini-pill) pill, intra-muscular progesterone injections or implant. The Mirena coil is also suitable for lupus patients in a stable relationship.

Hello

I'm in the same position as you with what feels like quite a whirlwind time of consultations and diagnosis, and feeling totally bewildered! I finished the course of combined pills I was on and have now moved onto progesterone only pillafter a failed attempt at the Mirena coil (bit too personal for details here, sorry).

I understand it's not an immediate risk but best to change ASAP because the oestrogen can cause flare ups and high blood pressure etc and like Paul said below, other complications. x x

Avoid any pill with estrogen. You will probably notice that your symptoms get worse around your monthly cycle. There are other options, but the typical pill will make you feel worse.
