Hi was wandering if any of you lovely people could give me info/ advice on going for skin biopsy. My lupus rash is intermittent so if it is not present on day of biopsy does this affect results??

TIA

I think there are different kinds of biopsies. One I had was called the "lupus band" test. It was looking for immune system components under the skin. It wasn't on a rash area, but the components were still there. They also checked a red circle rash that I had, but that wasn't lupus. It was called "numular dermatitis."

I've had four skin "patch" biopsies...one taken from my forehead, one arm, two from one leg. Each one done under local anaesthetic. Takes about 30mins. They cut a small 5mm square patch of skin, and sew it up afterwards. Had to go back a week later to have the stitches out. Each time, they took it from an area that looked like it was lupus rash.

Hi Karen, I had two skin biopsies on either arm, it was like diagnosed, local anaesthetic, except my were like a small circular punch one that did not need stitches. My rash was in full rage, sorry I am not sure if it makes a difference. I was diagnosed with Subacute Cutaneous Lupis. Wanted to send my good thoughts and hope all goes well. ML

Hi Karen

I had a scalp biopsy as I had a nasty rash and a bald patch. That's when they said Discoid Lupus - worth having done. Apart from first jab totally painless. The rash had died down when they did the biopsy but Lupus is in the system? Good luck

I had one about 6 years ago still have a scar from it on my arm looks like a massive BCG lol, it wasn't done right with the right treatment think I was just unlucky, anyways it came back saying I just had itchy skin lol! And gave me some moisturiser, after a few years of dealing with these rashes and the doctors stopped listening to me saying it wasn't my condition, it ended up on my face and whole body, red swollen sore horrible and at 22 it just cut my confidence down 100% my mum seen how upset I was and called the hospital giving off saying it's her lupus she is getting seen now or I'll be taking her to a&e till you see her, well got an appointment the next day, was a lupus flare up and was the first time they recognised I had lupus, they kept calling it mixed connective tissue disorder, and put me on steroids and new drugs and amazing I got better what a surprise! So biopsy sometimes work maybe that patch they took was just normal skin and not a lupus rash but for 6 years I had to keep telling them this isn't normal, but I always listen for my body and now if I get rashes I know my lupus is Flaired up and not just some "itchy skin". Maybe lupus causes that and doesn't have any different skin genes? Idk that much into it tho lol

Hi;

To answer your question

Yes you have to have a rash present for them to get a biopsy. Or so I was told by my doctors. My biopsy was done with the rash present. That was about 5 years ago.
