I also have lupus and I'm a member of the group lupus UK on facebook. The other day one lady asked the question if anyone else has that problem and there are many that suffer from it but none of us know why exactly. I asked my nephrologist last week if it could be cause by any of the meds I'm on, he checked and said no. I'm going to ask my rheumy at the end of the month. Good luck x

I asked my rheumatologist and she said it could be if your glands are swollen or just your hormones. Told me to think about HRT.

Well I was checked for menopause and it was negative and most of the other ladies too are not in the menopause. To be honest I don't think they really know what causes it.

Assuming you are female and over 45ish - then it might be hormonal changes - you could check it out with your GP.

I had same problem for approximately 6 months last year. I was not menopausal and Dr said nothing to do with my meds. I actually was so bad that I had a towel draped over my shoulders most of the time. My close friends had discussed it and nobody had seen anyone sweat like it before. Not athletes or mothers going through menopause. It was literally pouring out my face. That was where it was worst. Even in the winter with snow on the ground I would be out walking the dog in a t-shirt. The freezing weather seemed to stop me from breaking into a sweat but I was roasting.

I did read somewhere that lupus can cause problems in people regulating there own body temperature but can't remember where I read this so not sure how reliable the information was. The swearing has stopped but I don't know why. Hopefully it will stop soon for you too.

Hi

I found that when my lupus is very active I did get terrible night sweats and episodes of sweating in the day too. It was so bad I was changing the bed daily because the sheets would be wet through.

Are you taking antimalarials as this does seem to control it.

My daughter (the Lupie I go on this forum for) gets incredibly hot, although doesn't have a problem with sweating. But her body temperature is way higher than the rest of us, so she's always having to have the windows open in the car, even in winter, and wears minimal clothing. I had heard somewhere that Lupus is described as a hot disease in Eastern cultures so Chinese medical practictioners might consider that as part of the whole picture of symptoms, but here it's not really considered. Perhaps she'll look into Acupuncture and Chinese medicine at some point...

I've been diagnosed and treated for RA and also am hypothyroid. I have Raynauds and Sjogrens too and think I probably have seronegative Lupus or UCTD rather than or as well as RA.

I'm 52 and presently in hospital for an infected wound/ blood poisoning/ abcess. I had my menopause early and no sweats or flushes, periods just stopped and FSH very high and that was that.

Then I stopped sweating completely for about a year - could jog, go to Zumba and not although I would overheat which was scary and drank loads of water to try and not pass out.

A few months ago this reversed and now I have these awful sweats like those you describe - all through the day, sometimes at night so I wake up drenched around my chest, neck, face abd hair. Day time ones are the worst. They seem to come from nowhere and I'm not exactly rushing about just now!

Of course here in this hospital and amongst my friends they all assume it's menopausal/ hormonal. But I don't.

When I asked about this here someone (Purpletop) said it was probably autonomic neuropathy and I'm sure this is right. But no one in my medical team or in this hospital seems to be willing to acknowledge this so I've just done my own adding up and just nod politely about the hormones!

Hi, I've been living with Lupus for 28 yrs. I've found that a lot of the meds they use to treat Lupus causes these bouts of profuse sweating . At one point, I was having to change clothes 2 or 3 times a day and changing my bed sheets everyday. It was not pleasant! I don't what meds you are receiving...but it may be the cause of what you are experiencing and need to switch meds. Just a thought you may want to talk to your dr. about. Wishing you well!
