Whole body scan at Nuclea Medicine Centre.

Hi all. I had my much needed Rheumatology appointment on 4th June (after suffering for 20 years). I had a detailed assessment with 13 blood texts and the dry eyes test with litmus paper hanging out my eyes for 5 minutes (very painful).

I've now got an appointment for a full body scan at The Nuclea Medicine Centre next Tuesday which is great and very quick.

Has anyone else had this scan and were you ok with the Isotope injection into the veins? I'm worrid about the injection and having a reaction from the Isotope, plus I don't like injections. Any support gladly welcomed. Thanks, Claire

Hi Claire,

I have not had a full body scan, but individually I have had several scans to cover a lot of my body and two did have injections. They were fine. One time the needle was placed in my arm and on another it was in my hand. I just felt a bit of a scratch. When the injection was put in for the first scan it just felt very warm throughout my body, very pleasant actually! The second time, it was similar, but I was warned that I will feel like I am peeing myself on the table but I won't be! It was true, I felt I was peeing on the table but I didn't. A very strange experience, but it was all carried out fine. I had no reactions to the injections which I believe is very rare. I also had to drink an iodine substance as well for one of them which tasted revolting. On the longest scan which was about 45 minutes they played the radio which helped enormously to distract from the loud knocking of the scanner. I would be happy to go through it again so it wasn't at all bad. I hope you will be ok there is really nothing to worry about.

It's nice to know that you finally have had a rheumy appointment. I too have been ill for 20 years and am waiting for my first rheumy appointment. I hope I am as lucky as you and have such a thorough examination.

Good luck on Tuesday, although you won't need it honestly, you will be fine. :)

Hi Claire

Ivr rarely heard of such a thorough examination for a diagnonsis. Well done.

Ive not witnessed your scan but really interested in it. Will you please return to tell us about it and what was the result. Wow if all those tests help for a diagnosis that is very impressive.

Will be thinking of you.

Best wishes

Hi there, Yes definitely I'll update afterwards! I'm quite impressed with the assessment and speed also, it makes such a nice change after the last 20 years, I think I've struck lucky with finding a good rheumatologist. Will update after Tuesday.

Hi Claire 133, just saw your post and wanted to say I had a DAT scan last year to find out if I had Parkinson's because of the tremor I have related to APS. I was injected with a radioactive substance at the Nuclear medicine dept at Guys and I can honestly say it gave me no problems whatsoever. I hope all goes well and you get some of the answers you need. Nonny

I had similar for a gallbladder scan. i just felt like warm fluid going through but I was ok otherwise. You'll be slightly radioactive for 2 hours afterwards, so look where you sit when you get out, they have special rooms for those who had injections and have to wait to go in again (you might not need to, I did). And if you leave immediately, they will probably tell you to use a different loo from the family for a few hours afterwards.

But you won't feel any different.
