Merry Christmas everyone! I was diagnosed with pleurisy earlier this week, I've had pleurisy in the past and it is very painful. I was told that this is common in lupus patients. Does anyone know of anything that would help with the pain besides pain meds.

Merry Christmas, all - and Veronica, I'm so sorry: pleurisy was what felled me. I'm already on substantial pain medication, but my GP upped it with Oramorph (which I'm pretty sure is laudanum by any other name!). I also found a hot wheat bag very soothing . . . but it wasn't fun and I wish you better very soon.

And, Nicky, I too have the cough from the bowels of hell - is it not the most disgusting thing ever? My husband started it, and six weeks on has just added conjunctivitis to his woes. It was certainly the loudest Christmas we've had in a while. I normally swear by the juice of a lemon, spoon of honey, and tsp of freshly ground (in a pestle) black pepper, all topped up with boiling water, to cut through the phlegm, but not even that's helping much. Any other ideas, let me know!

Hi Overall pain handling in Lupus is tricky. It all depends on your personal condition/ symptoms and the particular part of your body that is affected. I tend to drink a lot of tea with Manuka honey, ( Australian honey that does have some anti bacterial capacity and consequently works as a mild anti inflammatory be it only so far on open wounds and chest infections researched. This is new research and very little published, however it's picking up and currently even stores like Aldi provide the proper MANUKA honey. ( £4)

I would advise to consult people with knowledge of plants. there are some plants that have painkilling characteristics, but again be careful it is all very much personally adjusted and you should always liaise with your GP. IN relation to most pianos , relaxation is good and helps, be it by bath, spas, to name but 2 examples. Again you have to be cautious with pleurisy for the shock hot cold could affect your breathing.

I hope you get better soon.

Two things tend to help me, I get get a sudden stabbing pain with mine, when I do I get someone to press quite hard with the heel of their hand where the pain is located, sounds odd but works for me. At night I find that in bed start in a sitting up position and slowly take one cushion/pillow away at a time.

Hope its of some help
