Hi, is it true that lupus hides form blood test sometimes?

Yes it is possible. I recently read a Canadian study that noted that during the first few years of age onset SLE (I.e. When you get it in your 30's or 40's or later) that during the first 3 years blood tests can be negative or inconclusive. So as it affects us all in different ways at different times then negative and variable bloods are entirely possible IMHO..

I wondered this too. I went to hospital yesterday to see the Rheumatologist... and they were puzzled as Ive got all the symptoms of SLE yet my blood tests show normal... even though I have inflammation (which is clearly seen) around my eye, temples, knees and hands, also spine problems which I need an MRI for .. They have now done the more sensitive test for SLE but Ive heard you can be Seronegative ... and blood tests can alter/fluctuate ... so some Rheumatologist dont rely solely on blood tests -x-

Yes 100%! my bloods too show to be negative, though Lupus is questionable with me but im fighting for a diagnosis for some type of inflammatory arthritis, bloods can be negative though you have all the symptoms, a web site I found very informative is chronic curve which explains a lot about being seronegative, print it off and show your Consultant. best of luck with it all xx

In the last 2 1/2 years I have had ANA from negative to >1:1280, the negative result fell between a 1:320 and a 1:1280. Usually I come in at 320 or 640, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with how I am feeling.

My bloods have always been clear that's why it took so long for me to be diagnosed by symptoms alone.

I'm struggling with the same thing. I have all the symptoms for lupus, blood shows inflammation, and marker for it is abnormal but no positive ANA. So first rheumatologist I saw said yes it sounds like lupus but without positive ANA he won't treat me and told me not to come back for a year. Then we can redo blood test to see if it's changed. So in the meantime I'm stuck trying different medications with my GP to cope with the pain and inflammation. Don't know what to do, think I need to find a different rheumy who has time for me. I'm so sorry to hear that others are having similar problems, but it is nice to know I'm not alone.

Hi just wanted to reply to yours. My bloods have come back negative for nearly 3 years now. And my rhumy is treating me. As if I have Lupus. The diagnosis I have is inflammatory arthritis possible undifferentiated connective tissue disease. I would recommend you

see a different rhumy. What meds are you given by your gp? A year seems way to long because gp's will only prescribe certain mess with a consultants say so.
