Has anyone with Lupus been diagnosed with diabetes or pre diabetes despite not being overweight? Are the two linked in some way?

Hello & Welcome to LuPUS Patients Understanding & Support (LUPUS) at HU!

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly referred to as lupus, often coexists with other autoimmune diseases; according to a study published by SAGE Publications, around 30% of people diagnosed with systemic lupus have at least one coexisting autoimmune disorder, one of which being Type 1 diabetes.

Only Type 1 diabetes is autoimmune. This is a very important distinction. In autoimmune diabetes, weight is irrelevant unlike Type 2, where bad eating habits, which include fat & sugar, can be controlled by diet.

We also have another website called the LuPUS Message Board where you can also post questions and talk to other people. Registration is FREE and we offer free information and free online psychological support. We specialise in psychological support with our own counsellor/psychotherapist available.

By becoming a Member, you will have access to the private forums and because they are private, only Members have access and even bots and search engines are forbidden.

Please use the following to complete the Date of Birth entry: nn-nn-nnnn where n=number. Thus, if your birthday is 5th May 1968, enter: 05-05-1968. Use the “-“ separator and not the “/“.

I look forward to talking with you more!

Sometimes we need to talk to people who understand and who are not family or friends.

With good wishes!

I have! I was diagnosed with lupus this December and at the same Nd of July, after routine tests,, it appears l have developed diabetes. They found a high fasting glucose and protein and ketones in my urine. This is all new to me. I am not overweight. I eat well. I do have a treat every now and then.

I also have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, eczema, and asthma. They say once you have one autoimmune disease, you can develop others. I have an appointment with the diabetic clinic this Monday after they started me on insulin recently. It seems it has been one thing after another since December for me.
