We invite you to share your lung cancer heroes with the larger lung cancer community. If you have a lung cancer survivor/patient, caregiver, family member, colleague or health care professional who stands out in the fight against lung cancer, we want to hear their story! In addition, anyone who shares their hero will be entered to win a personal dedication during the Summer Jam event on June 26.

How do I choose my lung cancer hero when everyone on this site has proven to be a source of encouragement and hope despite being vulnerable themselves to this deadly disease? Also, I would also want to include my mother, Vavaneen Lewis and my husband John Hench, my caregivers. I was diagnosed with stage four NSC Adenocarcinoma in 2013. They were there to take me to appointments and take care of me when I experienced side effects. When I was at my weakest, they were at their strongest. Unfortunately, my mother, an ovarian cancer survivor, passed away after a stroke in 2017. My husband, whose love helped me want to survive, got me to the hospital after I fell and in time before I went into cardiac arrest. John was also diagnosed with lung cancer In 2019. He only lasted a little over two months and died at the end of October, 2019. My oncologist, Dr. Jeff Petty, in Winston-Salem, N.C. is a compassionate and knowledgeable man. I trusted his guidance as we chose the best options for me. Now my son, Chad, has stepped into his dad’s shoes getting me to appointments and my recent surgery for breast cancer. With them all, I have experienced hope and faith that I will survive. How can I choose just one?

This is late because I just now saw this. I know it won’t count but I still wanted to respond.

Hi Ncpoet,

Such a beautiful "problem" to have, too many heroes. I don't think you can choose one, but to your point I think we can highlight heroes among us often just by acknowledging them in other ways like this forum. Taking time to reflect on the people in our lives who have comforted, helped, entertained, and informed us creates beautiful reminders of the beauty of being human.
