LCHF and the menopause

Hi, I am in week 4 of LCHF and IF 16:8. I have lost 10lbs in total but when I researched this eating regime I didn’t consider any implications of doing this whilst going through the menopause. (Age 53)

I certainly don’t feel bloated anymore but have intermittent bleeding that I didn’t have pre LCHF.

I would like to know if anyone else is in the same position and really want reassurance that I’m following the right plan.

Thank you all

Hi Symmo,

From my experience over the past 7 months, and other anecdotal information I've read/heard, LCHF and keto can have quite an effect on monthly cycles and hormone levels generally (and anything regulated by those hormone levels!)..

For me, it has meant really irregular cycles to start with, and now very long cycles. Someone previously wrote a similar post commenting that she had had more frequent and irregular bleeding.

Obviously always best to check with your doctor, but there's a good chance that it's to do with changes in hormone levels relating to dietary changes. From what I've read, it usually settles down after a few months. For me, I seem to be stuck with the longer cycles now. I'm quite happy with that though- they were too frequent before!

Here is a link to another post on the subject of monthly cycles and LCHF:

There may be other posts on the subject too if you do a search.

Please do post again with an update, or any new information you find out.

Best of luck getting to the bottom of it, and for everything to settle down soon!

Hiya. I've only been doing LCHF and IF and am menopausal too. Haven't noticed and bleeding yet. 11 lbs down though and so happy with all other aspects of the plan. Dont think there's much scientific research on how this eating style affects us at our age. Definitely check with gp. Good luck

Hi Lynne64

I am posting this to you and Lytham

I appreciate this is an old post however I am almost I believe menopause- possibly still peri ? I have been fasting but not doing the LCHF way.

Can I ask what you eat as I don’t know how much is low and how much is high of each. You all seem to be doing well on it which is fab. Are there any recipe books out there for this lifestyle.

Many thanks

Try dietdoctor.com - they cover a range of medical issues + LCHF altho I haven't looked that one up (all dim and distant past for me!)

I eat fish, meat, dairy and vegetables mainly, the best advice I can give is to google Diet Doctor for what to eat, there is lots of meal plans and recipies on there too ! Good luck, let us know how you get on ! :-) x

Oh so it’s Keto?! Didn’t realise lol

I thought Keto seemed like hard work but I will definitely take a look!

Need to lay off the vodka lol even though it’s one of the better drinks it’s still high in carbohydrates I think and will interfere with the fasting!

I think it's recommended that you do keto for the first two weeks then transition into low carb !

It's so easy and the food is gorgeous and you're not hungry between meals, it's AMAZING :-)

I think vodka is one of the best ones I drink but I do like wine and that definitely interferes ! :-) lol x

It'll definitely help, but if you fancy one the diet doctor says vodka and diet coke is one of the lowest carbs drink ! :-) x

Wow ok so how does it differ from normal spaghetti 🍝 in taste? Also texture? Is it a special or will it always be around do you know.

I’m guessing you are in the Uk ha x

Lytham in reply toNewbeginnings20

Texture was really close and taste very similar but I put chicken and garlic and herb philli on, going to try it tomorrow with bolognese ! :-) x

Oh ok sounds good 👌 and I’ve just asked my friend to pick me some up!

Also reading the link you gave me and with the left over vodka from Christmas I will put soda water with it - Bish bosh that way no carbs 😁

Newbeginnings20 in reply toLytham

So did you cut up a chicken breast and cook it in a pan then melt the herb philli on it then add to the dry cooked spaghetti?

Lytham profile image
Lytham in reply toNewbeginnings20

I had some leftover cooked chicken so zapped that in the mic, boiled the spaghetti and stirred in the philli, voila ! :-) x
