Vitamin K

Hello out there!

I’ve been unable to get a doctor’s advice or even a comment on the wisdom of taking vitamin D3 with vitamin K2. I read on Google (!) that D3 ensures the absorption of calcium while K2 directs calcium to the bones and prevents it from depositing where it shouldn’t eg arteries, organs and joints. After taking Eltrombopag (Revolade) for a year and a half now I am totally familiar with the need to avoid anything with calcium and dairy for 4 hours before and two hours after taking the drug. So is it ok to take the D3/K2 tablet outside of this time frame? (I have osteopenia and need to strengthen my bones). And is it safe as I heard vit K is used for clotting problems or for reversing the blood thinning effects of warfarin.

I would be so grateful for the advice of a doctor who understands all the ins and outs of ITP.

Hi. I have been taking Vitamin D for about 10 months now as advised by my haematologist every day abd was on Revolade for several months and took it first thing in morning alongside my Revolade. I feel that this has truly helped my ITP as my system has been more stable and I have been drug free for a few months now and was advised because I live in Scotland to take it all year round.

Hope this helps a bit but I never took any vitamins before my diagnosis and feel they have really helped me.

Thanks Millielotttie that’s useful to know. I think though it’s the preparations with vitamin K that I’d like to know more about. Great to hear you’re drug free now. Thanks so much for taking the trouble to comment. All the best

I've had ITP for about 11 years. Recently I asked my Hematologist if I could take vitamin K2. Her reply was "NO, I don't want you getting into trouble by taking K2. We give K2 to people who come to the hospital bleeding, not for any other reason"

So I have not pressed the issue with the doctor. I completely trust this doctor, she has an MD degree and a PhD. She's brilliant and always open to suggestions. So if she says "NO" its for a very good reason. I too would like to know the " why" of anything, So if anybody gets valid information please post it on this site so we can be informed.

Many thanks, peace and good health to all!

Thank you very much bella. A very useful and interesting reply! Maybe I’ll stick to Vit D and probiotics. Would like to know the ‘why’ too. If your doctor could elaborate please let us all know! Best wishes x😊

How much Vitamin D do you take?

I was taking K2 when I started bleeding and getting bruises. I thought the K2 was causing those symptoms and I was later diagnosed with ITP. I’m afraid of K2 and won’t take it again. I still have ITP. I do take vit D and the calcium is returning to my bones without K2.

You might like to have a look at the Medline database at nlm.nih.govIt is free to use, and allows open access to journal articles etc. (Journal articles will have been peer reviewed, so should be relatively trustworthy!)
