Could a hemorrhagic cyst on an ovary be connected to ITP? This is my third one. My OB-GYN thinks there's a connection.

I have had ITP since I was 7 years old and my counts were dangerously low. My platelets stabilized to a safer level as I grew, but still ranged from 65 to 85 as an adult. I became pregnant with my first child and discovered a large hemorrhagic cyst on my ovary. My son was delivered via c-section and the cyst was removed at that time. I had another cyst removed this September. Now I am pregnant with my second child and have my third known cyst on the same ovary. My hematologist doesn't think it is related to ITP, but my OB-Gyn thinks it is. What do you think?

It doesn't matter what WE think. It matters what your hematologist thinks -- not your ob-gyn. I find that most doctors other than hematologists know very much about ITP. As you know, it's a pretty rare condition. Why not have your ovaries taken out, unless you want more children.

I guess I should have phrased my question differently. I really want to know if others with ITP have had similar problems with cysts on their ovaries. I understand that removing my ovaries may be an option upon the delivery of my second child. Of course, there will be hormonal consequences. Unfortunately, my relationship with my hematologist is not very good. I don't see him that often and don't feel that he cares to put a lot of effort in my case. Hence, my distrust and reason for seeking other resources to understand what may be occurring.

I have never heard of anyone else on any forum or in person talking about ovarian cysts so I wouldn't think it had anything to do with ITP. Of course if you have low counts and the cysts bleed, there is going to be more bleeding than for anyone with a normal count.

Thank you for your reply CamdenGirl. I guess it is fairly uncommon. I appreciate your feedback.
