I had a psa check last August showing PSA of 5. Rectum exam showed a small nodule on the prostate. Had an MRI scan, then a bone scan and CT scan. Results all negative BUT the biopsy showed a gleason of 5+3 (8) in one sample. SO the Urologist suggested radical prostatechtomy  by Da Vinci keyhole surgery. Had that in November. PSA was undetectable at the 3 month check. I am due another check in April. Of course I still wonder what the future holds. But the Urologist has said in his report that '....this gives him an excellent prognosis with a probably 10 year risk of PSA recurrence of only 12%.'

Inability to have erections after radical surgery is pretty well certain, but at 74, I am not too concerned about sexual activity, but have opted for the vacuum pump system. This is a bit cumbersome but it does induce erections. Without that, it is clear that I would not have erections at all.

The strange thing is that I had no symptoms before the original psa check. My wife simply suggested that I had a test because we have known, and know, others with prostate cancer.
