I was wondering if anyone has had any throat problems?
I've had a feeling as if there is a lump in my throat for a couple of months now and my GP thinks it's Globus pharyngeus. He wants to send me for a nasendoscopy but with my anxiety and fibro pain I'm too scared to go. 😔
Has anyone else suffered with anything like this or had this procedure done?

I too have this "lump" feeling in my throat. I have come to accept this as part of my fibro syndrome. It comes and goes.
Hi renalyn, thanks for the reply. Yes, mine comes and goes too - it can be scary and annoying! It seems the more anxious I am about it the worse it is, and I do have a tendency to over worry!

The nasendoscopy is absolutely fine, it goes down through your right nostril and honestly it's so quick and you hardly feel it.
The consultant did mine while I was sitting at his desk.
Definitely worth doing for peace of mind. Your GP, might be able to offer you something to help you with your appointment.

Thank you CheetieCat - I've been so worried about the nasendoscopy! My gag reflex is really bad so been scaring myself with silly thoughts! Nice to know you hardly feel it!

No, not really. My voice goes really hoarse and constantly have to clear my throat but once they've ruled out anything nasty they don't seem bothered at all. Sugar free gum, sweets and plenty drinks. GP says it's fibro, others say it's not ??? 🙄

I have a similar feeling of something stuck in between my throat and my nose and I am not able to swallow/get rid of it. I notice it particularly when I go to bed and it is quite annoying. It got worse after I had covid. I have read it is common in fibro patients. Another thing we have to get used to😒
I agree Dodo21, at night it can seem worse for me too. Not nice at all!

I’ve had this done and even though my nasal passages were inflamed at the time (I also suffer from allergic rhinitis) and had previously been identified as being very small I didn’t have any problems with it.
I’m new to the fibro issue (I’ve yet to get a fibro diagnosis so I don’t know if I have it) but I do know that there can be other things that cause this sensation and it’s worth getting it checked out.

Hi. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia nearly 4yrs ago and get throat problems. I've always loved singing and sometimes some notes won't come out, just gradually became worse. I get sore throats a lot, particularly at this time of year. Several years ago I had quinsy ( abcess on tonsil) twice. Also, once when mowing the lawn mowed some fungi which disturbed the spores. The immediate pain that followed in my throat was so intense and frightening but thankfully subsided quite quickly. I've had that experience since when out and about in Autumn ( love Autumn and fungi too!) Just have to be wary. I think quinsy left a vulnerability in my case and fibro in addition also makes us supersensitive to all sorts of things. Good luck and hope you get a solution soon.
Thanks Wendy -Loo. I caught a virus years ago that affected my voice box - I can't shout very loud anymore! I Hope you don't get anymore bad throat issues either.
I have been having the lump in the throat feeling while swallowing and also getting it for no apparent reason for a while and and the feeling that something is stuck in my chest. I have also been getting anxiety type feelings, dull chest aching, fast heart rates over 120bpm while resting and have been found to have Atrial Fibrillation. It might be worth considering being checked for that as a precaution. You could also ask the doctor if you have costochondritis as that can have similar symptoms.
Hi Trip77, thanks for the advice. Looks like I need to get it checked out at ENT and if everything looks okay look into what you've suggested. It's hard to know if some of these symptoms are fibro related - but I need to treat it as a seperate issue and as you say, check for other things with the doc.

hello, I have had this feeling for four years and after going through speech and language being told twice they had lost my notes I finally got referred to the gastroenterologist and he called me last week and Sunday just gone I actually went in for the endoscopy. After waiting for such a longtime, choking on food and fluids and tablets getting stuck in my throat and constantly coughing to clear my throat🤦♀️It all happened so quickly but what I wasn’t told was I should take someone with me for coming home afterwards as I should have been sedated 🤦♀️Well it was either come away and wait god knows how long for another appointment or have it done whilst I was awake. I can’t say it wasn’t uncomfortable or pleasant but I got through it with the help of the wonderful nursing staff and breathing techniques and am currently waiting for my results as they took 4 biopsies. I’m hoping this was just standard procedure and just making sure nothing untoward is there as I had some mild s scarring on my small intestine I think they said and I have a hiatus hernia from it too. Anyway the point of my long explanation is that if anyone has to have this procedure and doesn’t want to be sedated with the risks that come with that well, it’s not at all painful just quite uncomfortable so please don’t worry and if you are able to stay calm that helps a lot. So I wish you all the best with it and if I got through it being awake whilst it was being done then most people probably would although as we all know everyone is different and react differently to everything x

My swallowing has changed significantly since being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. So much so that I had a barium swallow and was diagnosed with Esophageal Dismotility. I have been experiencing some really worrying symptoms for over two years now. Swallowing, muscle twitches, muscle jerks, tremors, dry eyes, dry mouth, extreme pain and crunching and grinding joints. Google my symptoms and it leads you down a rabbit hole nobody would want to go down. I just try and live my life and have gratitude for each day. Not sure why I'm posting this but it kinda helps to share with other who are experiencing similar symptoms.
Hi LoobyM, I totally get what you're saying about the rabbit hole! Since my fibro diagnosis it seems to have been one thing after the other. I always treat each symptom as a seperate issue to fibro but never really know if it's related or not. I really don't like the throat issue though...can be quite scary at times. So sorry about the Esophageal Dismotility, did they suggest anything to help?

Thanks Alltheflowers . They prescribed me something that helps with feeling nauseous. Even though I have never mentioned feeling nauseous. Needless to say, I stopped taking it. I suffer with regurgitation now so whatever it is is progressive, which is also somewhat troubling. But all the worrying will not change anything ao I do my best to stay positive. 50mg of Sertraline a day helps dampen down my health anxiety. Do you take anything for your swallowing problems?

No, not really, GP wants me to go for nasendoscopy which I will have to do just to be safe. I've recently started taking Amitryptiline for anxiety and funnily enough my throat feels a little better (touch wood!) So maybe it is globus as doc thinks, made worse by anxiety... time will tell I suppose. I'll probably wake up tomorrow and it will be back again!
So sorry about the regurgitation you're suffering, sounds awful. I do hope things improve for you soon.
Some of these symptoms can be worrying, especially when its the throat and it can be hard to take your mind of it at times, but we have to carry on don't we!

Yes, this happened to me when I first got ill. It was not only a lump in the throat sensation, it actually hurt to swallow saliva though not food. I actually called it 'the iron bar' as if felt like something was across my throat. I had an endoscopy which showed gastritis and reflux; I was put on muscle relaxing drugs and the lump faded away. If my reflux is bad or I am very stressed I can feel my throat trying to tighten again but it never gets as bad as before. As for the camera down your nose, I had that for a different throat issue and it's not that scary or painful. Just makes your eyes run a bit.

Can I ask which muscle relaxing meds you were put on?
Hi. It was amitriptyline, also used or chronic tension headaches and muscle spasms. It makes you very sleep at first!
That's really strange...I've just started Amitryptiline and it does feel much better. I was given it for anxiety and fibro pain but it seems to be doing the trick on the throat as well!
