Hi everyone

New here. I’ve had fibromyalgia for at least 8/9 years. I’ve just recently been referred to rheumatology and the want to do test for spondylitis. From what I’ve read on the nhs website it’s quite scary!

Can’t talk to my partner just in case it turns out not to be spondylitis. Saves the both of us worrying.

Just wondered what other people have experienced and if there’s anyone in a similar situation to me.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi there, what part do you find scary? Is it the testing? Blood tests, x ray's or scans are quiet painless and quick. Good luck with your tests and I hope everything comes back ok xx

Thank you for your reply. The mri scares me as I can get claustrophobic despite having previously had some. And the results. If it does come back that I do have spondylitis I dread to think what that could mean for my future. Correct me if I’m wrong please, but I understand that it could cause bones to fuse together. I’m already in a lot of pain I can’t imagine what that would feel like.

I’m only 29.

I can understand you being claustrophobic in the MRI machine, they worry me too and I'm a former nurse!

You could ask to be sedated for the MRI, my daughter's Mother in Law has to be sedated before undergoing one as she panics badly.

If it is spondylosis the sooner you are diagnosed the better as more can be done for it at the early stages.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers, Midori

Thank you for your reply. I wasn’t aware that I could ask to be sedated. I think I’ll have to request that. When I’ve previously had a mri I felt suffocated.

That does help thank you. I may be worrying about nothing but it’s that little voice in the back of my mind that’s full of worry.

Thank you for your reply. It’s the outcome that is scaring me the most because it could be spondylitis or something worse. I have quite a few medical conditions. I don’t know if I could cope with anything more...

The rheumatologist is definitely the right person to see, he can tell you if you have fibro or not and then you can go from there.
