Hi, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia officially yesterday although I have really been hurting for well over a year now. I am feeling pretty low and it is taking a while to sink in that I may not just recover with just a bit of rest. Does anyone have any advice etc?

Hi M4n1X and welcome to the forums

I'm sorry to hear you've been diagnosed with fibro, its is not nice but it is possible to live a life with it. Below is what I've posted to another user who just joined but the same message applies so I hope it can help you too.

The first thing I will say though is listen to your body, especially at the moment. The mix of emotions will have an impact on you physically and taking care of both body and mind is so important.

Denial is a very understandable emotion but having fibro is not the end of the world or a death sentence; although when you are in pain at times it may feel that way. It is possible to live a fairly reasonable life with fibro; I work and have a social life, it just takes a bit more time and planning. Having fibro isn't easy but you can learn to deal with your symptoms and know when / how to push the boundaries.

Its important to remember though that you aren't being silly or pathetic if you have a bad day. Some days you will be able to do things and others you will not, this can even change by the hour; this is where learning and listening about your body is so important.

Get as much help from the medical professionals as you can. Ask about Pain Management Referrals many Hospital Trusts run Pain Management Courses, which are excellent and focus on living with your condition not just medicating. Ask your GP about it and also about physiotherapy (if you need that) as sometimes muscle training or such like can help.

Remember also that medication is unique to the person as the disorder is. What works for me might not work for you, so it will be trial and error for a little while until you get a balance of meds that works for you. It can seem long and torturous but from one who has been through it, it is worth it in order to function.

Talk to your friends and family about your diagnosis if you feel comfortable doing so. For me I've always found being open and honest about it is the easiest way to go.

Ask any questions you need to and I am sure all of us will do our best to help you.

Welcome to the forum Beth_19  has given you excellent advice.  It is a bit like a grieving process and you have to let yourself go through all the gammots of emotion as you try to get your head around the new you.  It does have a few compensarions as now we can no longer rush around at breakneck speed we do have more time to smell the roses.  I have done a little bit of gardening and instead of being like a bull at a gate I have kept on sitting down and exami ing a petal and watching the Dunnock looking for food and listening g to bird song.

Have you had a look at our mother site Fibromyalgia Action. UK as it has a wealth of information.  Look forward to your future posts.x

Hi there

I can see that you have been welcomed which is great :)

You may like to have a look at our mother site for lots of useful information fmauk.org

The main thing to know and remember about Fibro is that it affects everyone very differently.

Some people can have a manageable social and work life, whilst others are not able to do this.  It depends upon the severity of your Fibro.  Some of our members are bed ridden.  I only mention this to show what a vast difference there is, between how we personally are affected by our Fibro.

I have had Fibro for 34 years, and have tried just about everything I can possibly think of to help me manage my Fibro better.

My GP and I work together to decide what meds to try and which clinics may be useful to attend.  It is a matter of trial and error before you find what works best for you.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.  I have made some truly wonder friends during my time here and feel very blessed to have found this forum.

Wishing you less pain and more peace

Lu x
