Unusual Throat Problem

Hi, I don't know if anyone has had a bad throat where there are white small patches that keep coming and going and red sore patches. I have had this for about 5 weeks now. Been to the gp's and at first they gave me penicillin which did not work. Then I was given Erythromycin, I was only on that 2 days, which caused a violent reaction and I was severely unwell. My gp then gave me a throat swab. This came back normal to my surprise and has now prescribed more penicllin and i am due to have a blood text early next week to test for glandular fever. I feel tired, but I am coping and plodding on, but I am really worried about my throat. The roof of my mouth seems to come and go with small white dots that look like (yeast). Doctor said it was not thrush or strep....I am at a loss. It's not very pleasant and have a tiny taste in my mouth.

Would appreciate any feedback on this.

Are you able to scrape the white patches off?

Hi forgot to mention that I don't have any tonsils, had them removed about 7 years ago.

That's a bit of a mystery - i would have thought it was thrush, but if your doc says no, then I think he's doing the right thing getting you tested for glandular fever.

To keep your throat comfortable in the meantime, take some paracetamol fairly regularly, and use mouthwashes of warm water with a teaspoon of salt stirred in.

You can use this as often as you wish - i would be a bit wary of anything stronger until you know what's going on.

Also, make sure you have enough fluids to drink, and rest when you can.

I hope you feel better very soon.

I had this and it was eventually found to be glandular fever related symptoms. Maybe ask for some blood tests. It was what triggered off my fibro in my opinion.

Do you have acid reflux problems at all? I get regular sore throats, exactly as you describe with red/white patches- sometimes even ulcers, and it is do to reflux at night, especially if I don't take my omeprazole or eat a large meal close to bed time x

Hi, yes I do have acid reflux and take medication for it. That's interesting as I never related throat problems with acid reflux.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi Tannels, I was diagnosed with Barratts Osophegus in 2009, even without you realising it the reflux hits your throat and was told the throat doesn't like it as it burns it, I lost my voice when this first started and still haven't regained it back I have endoscopes every one or two yrs depending how it is each time they do one, I was having them every six months, I take omeprazol twice a day, wish I better gentle hugs ...Dee x

Hi Tannels, like Moffy, the first thing I thought of was thrush if the swab came back negative. It might be worth trying a mouth wash/gargle of diluted vinegar - cider or wine is more palatable but any will do. Use it a few times a day. If it is thrush it should get rid of it in pretty quick order. If not the worse it will do is sting a little. Do make sure you rinse with clear water afterwards so you don't leave an acidic residue on your teeth. Hope this helps x

My son periodically gets a sore throat with visible white patches on his tonsils and clear flesh coloured pustules on the back of his throat. He has post viral ME/CFS and I just assume this is all just part of it.

Hi, I had this about a month ago, I couldn't eat, drink or swallow without awful pain and I thought it was thrush too. I saw the nurse at my surgery as the doctors were all fully booked as usual.Anyway she prescribed Nystatin oral suspension. It tasted awful and was probably the worst texture ever but I had to swish it round my mouth and then swallow it. As vile as it was after three days my mouth started started to feel better within a week it was almost all gone. There is nothing worse than feeling rough but when its all the usual aches and pains and not being able to eat or drink as well it makes it so much worse. Hope this helps xxxx

I am seeing my GP again, so will ask about this. Pleased it worked for you and your feeling better. I totally agree about other things on top of the fibro, it makes you feel really run down. All I want to do at the moment is drink warm drinks, to ease my throat.
